For the most part, cover songs tend to be a disaster. They often lack something magical that made the original version so special and are often performed by mediocre singers. In the past, however, Irish band the Corrs have managed to turn their few cover songs upside down, putting their own unique stamp on them - for example, their remake of Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams' is so different from the original as to put them in two different categories. Therefore, when the band's lead singer, Andrea, decided to release an album of all cover songs as her follow-up to 2007's "Ten Feet High", I wasn't immediately worried. Looking at the song choices has solidified my belief in her: the album is fantastic.

In order to make "Lifelines" work, Andrea needed to choose lesser-known tracks and put her own unique stamp on them. Happily, this is exactly what she's done. Choosing from artists as varied as John Lennon (and no, she didn't pick the over-done 'Imagine'), Roy Orbison, and the Velvet Underground, she has crafted a record of eleven classics that weave together in a magical way.

From the first few notes of World War II standard 'I'll Be Seeing You', it's evident that this album is the polar opposite of her first solo record. Where that was a mess of over-production, this one seems to rely on the sentiment that less is, truly, more. For me, the best tracks are 'Pale Blue Eyes', which somehow weaves magic, sneaking up on you when you least expect it; 'Blue Bayou', a catchy and summery Roy Orbison tune; 'No 9 Dream', a dream-like explosion of color; 'Tinseltown in the Rain', which is not only unique but unexpected; and 'They Don't Know', a catchy yet scaled-back sing-along classic. That's not to put down any of the other songs, though, because they are incredible as well.

As a past Corrs fan, I cannot recommend this solo album from Andrea Corr, Lifelines. It consists of eleven mostly bland covers that typically served only to make me wish for the original songs. That's partly because these covers are often worse than the originals, with examples such as a slightly less enthusiastic version of Tracey Ullman's "They Don't Know About Us" (stripped of the original's fun '60s "girl group" throwback element). So many of the covers just seem unnecessary, like the cover of John Lennon's "No. 9 Dream." It's just a bad idea to do an easy-listening version of that classic tune! Still, if you feel like you want to have a few songs from this album, a couple of slow songs at the end of the album are not too bad, covers of tunes by Ron Sexsmith and Daniel Johnston. Those covers are better because she is singing less familiar songs, so she can put a bit of her own slant on the material without the long shadow of the original being cast over it.

LOve this cd from Andrea! Not a bad follow up to her solo debut. Highlights include: "They Don't Know". A great cd to have when you are waiting around for the next Coors cd!

Ok so I have to be honest: with the exception of "Blue Bayou", I've never heard any of the original versions of the songs featured on this album. But I do know that after hearing Andrea's versions, it makes me curious to hear the originals and compare, even though I know I will be biased towards Andrea's. I just love her voice and I really don't care what she sings, just as long as she does! Songs from this album that stand out for me are: "Tinseltown In The Rain", "State Of Independence", "Pale Blue Eyes". If you're an Andrea Corr fan, definitely listen to this! If you're a Corrs fan, well, you might be disappointed because this is just Andrea's voice/song covers, so it's definitely not gonna sound like the whole group since, as Andrea has said in the past, it took 4 people to make that sound.

Can't wait for her next album!

I love Andrea Corr, and her voice, she has the sexiest female voice ever. If her voice and Adam Levine's voice had a baby, the world wouldn't know what to do with themselves.
Love this album, the old songs, and it is really cool to get sort of an insight into the music that inspired her as a musician, that may have helped create the sound of The Corrs. I love singing along in the car, though her range is more inpressively lower than mine. It is so soothing. My favorites are, Blue Bayou, Tomorrow in Her Eyes, I'll Be Seeing You, and Pale Blue Eyes, but there are other great songs as well.

Love it, but I'm a BIG FAN ... For example ... if Andrea ( and/or the Corrs band ) did a musical show set of just ... Irish humming tunes ... I'd log on to listen. Keeps me grounded, when surfing the web pipes ... Cheers ;)
