1.0 out of 5 stars Not so great, August 12, 2008
This review is from: Liferay Portal Enterprise Intranets: A practical guide to building a complete corporate intranet with Liferay (Paperback)
English is not the author's native language, and in this case it definitely causes some readability issues.

My biggest gripes, however, are with the content itself... or should I say lack of content. If you just stumbled into the concept of portals today and completely missed the documentation on the Liferay website then perhaps this book is for you. Otherwise, save your money and read the installation instructions from Liferay and just play with the software for ten minutes.

The interesting bits in the book are all generalized and only vaguely helpful. It's more like a product demonstration than an actual guide.

I almost gave the book two stars, but I became so frustrated trying to find anything useful in the index this morning that I chucked it into the recycle bin. On second thought, maybe I'll just donate it to the library.

1.0 out of 5 stars Out of date, April 15, 2009
This review is from: Liferay Portal Enterprise Intranets: A practical guide to building a complete corporate intranet with Liferay (Paperback)
This book is targeted for Liferay version 4. Do not buy this book if you've downloaded the latest Liferay release (5.2.x). Aside from the fact that this book is out of date with respect to the version, the grammar in this book made my brain ache; I couldn't read a paragraph without thinking "no professional could have written this book". I do not blame the author because he is clearly "not from 'round here"; I blame the publisher who must not be able to afford a technical editor with English grammar skills. Anyway, wait for the next version and hope that they have hired a skilled editor...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, August 5, 2008

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Liferay Portal Enterprise Intranets: A practical guide to building a complete corporate intranet with Liferay (Paperback)
This book covers install and basic usage of Liferay.
It's a great book for beginners as it helps understanding via a "classic" example how to operate in real life Liferay portal.
Installation of liferay is depicted for Tomcat, but once you are familiar with other application server it takes no time to move from Tomcat to an other one.
Then you quickly learn how to creat users, groups, organzation and how to play with localization, add portlets and management content.
This book does not cover how to develop portlets and should be seen for admin or user who are willing to use Liferay without having to develop portlets or any other components.
