Breeder requested Lifes Abundance but our new puppy wasn't eating well
on May 11, 2012
My wife and I are long time dog owners and just lost our 15 1/2 year old golden retriever 3 1/2 weeks ago. We purchased a really adorable 5 month old goldendoodle "comfort reteiver" one week ago from a breeder. He bonded very quickly to us and we really love this dog. The only problem is that he didn't want to eat the breeder recommended Lifes Abundance dog food. The breeder told us that he was a picky eater and not food motivated. We were having to mix his food with cottage cheese, wetting it, and even hand feed him one piece at a time. We took him to our vet two days after picking him up and the vet gave him a clean bill of health. We asked them about Lifes Abundance food and nobody at the clinic had heard of it. Our vet listed the top five pet food companies and said that these major companies spend millions in research to develop high quality and balanced pet foods targeted to the dog's age and breed type. The clinic provided us with a little care package provided by Hills Science Diet - no strings attached. It included a sample bag of puppy dog food. We had no intentions of using it. A couple days later we had the opportunity to ask a second vet friend about Lifes Abundance - same answer - never heard of it. Just yesterday, we decided to try a little bit of the sample puppy food from Science Diet - he ate it right up. So then we decided to make the switch. We mixed some of the Science Diet in with the Lifes Abundance - he picked out all of the Science Diet and left the Lifes Abundance. After talking to our vet about this, it was suggested that we just go ahead and make a complete switch. Today was our puppy's first full day on the Science Diet. He is now eating well and his stool this evening was still nicely formed. We will be donating the 40 pound bag of Lifes Abundance to an animal shelter.
As of 6/20/2012: Although our 6 month old puppy was eating much better with the Science Diet, we decided to try Blue Buffalo puppy food (Chicken and Brown Rice) after a friends recommendation and checking out reviews. We started changing him over on June 1 and he has now been completely on it for about 2 weeks. He "LOVES" it and eats it all up in one standing - no more going back and forth to the food bowl. It has a great fresh smell and great ingredient list. We think we found a winner. Although the Lifes Abundance also has a great ingredient list, our puppy really didn't like it. We're not saying that it's a bad food, just that our puppy didn't like it. We did donate the Lifes Abundance to a local animal shelter and are very happy with the Blue Buffalo puppy food - Chicken and Brown Rice.
