Book Description

October 17, 2005
"The Government would do well to appoint someone to teach us all how persuasion and influence work. I believe it's one of the key skills for everyone who wants to get on in life or business to learn. I'd give the job without hesitation, or even an interview, to Phil Hesketh. This book is the definitive guide to being more persuasive and influential." Steve McDermott, author of the bestselling How to Be a Complete and Utter Failure in Life, Work and Everything and winner of the European Business Speaker of the Year award.

Suppose there was a way to earn more money, get your own way and be more popular. There is. Life's A Game So Fix The Odds is a guide to some of the most powerful influencing and persuading techniques known to man. It shows you how to achieve what you thought was impossible. It reveals how positive communication really works. It proves that you can meet any challenge if you apply yourself in the right way.

Philip Hesketh uses accessible and memorable persuasion techniques that will have you laughing along and itching to use them. The principles can be applied to a whole range of life's challenges – from getting the best table at a restaurant and surpassing sales targets, to remembering people's names and negotiating a better salary. It's all within your grasp. It's so simple if you know how. Now you do.

Philip Hesketh is a psychology graduate who enjoyed a highly successful sales career at Procter & Gamble. In 1986 he was creator, Managing Partner and New Business Director of Advertising Principles, an advertising agency that has grown into a multi-million pound business. Having spent his entire working life studying and practicing persuasion and influence, Philip is now a speaker on 'The Psychology of Persuasion'. He mixes thought-provoking, well-researched, persuasive techniques with his own highly entertaining, unique brand of humour. The result? Audiences leave Philip’s events inspired and better informed on how buying, selling, persuading and influencing actually work.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best on negotiation and persuasion, March 22, 2009
This review is from: Life's a Game So Fix the Odds: How to Be More Persuasive and Influential in Your Personal and Business Life (Paperback)
I am very surprised (and honored) to be the first reviewer of this marvelous book which is both entertaining and helpful with its plenty of highly applicable real life samples. The advertising background of the author definitely helped. I am sorry that this book had not been a bestseller and I cant find a second book by the same author here on Amazon. What a pity! No matter what, this is a must read for people from all walks of life. Highly recommended!

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference. Hope you like them.

So how do you offer constructive criticism? By laying down tissue paper first. By regularly telling people what you think they are good at - with no "but" and no "however". - pg36

How often do you tell people what you want to tell them and not what they want to know? - pg38

So if someone is asking you the same question in more than one way, ask them why. Then you get to know their concerns, which in turn leads to greater understanding and greater empathy - and your ability to persuade them. -pg40

"Hi, Phil. Had a good holiday?" I would always reply to these questions "Great, thanks. How was yours?"...The point is that people are usually not interested in your weekend, your holiday or well being. They're interested in theirs. So get them to do the talking. - pg40

There are no objections, there are issues to address. You dont have a cheaper model, you have one that might fit your budget and is excellent value for money. - pg53

You cant run away from objections because the prospect is bound to find out eventually. Then concentrate on the positives, like why you are more expensive. Why is it better? How is it stronger? What can you do that the competitor cant? And most importantly, what are the intangible, emotional benefits that you can offer over and above your competition? Peace of mind is a superb example of an intangible benefit. - pg99

The other party need to think they've done well. pg112

If you are persuading, mirror the body language. If you are buying or feeling uncomfortable dont let your body do what it wants to do. - pg117

Nothing's agreed until it's all agreed. - pg118

To satisfy your wife or girl....

1. Be very very interested in whether it's the black dress or the red dress. If you are not actually interested, do your best to fake it. Glance away from the newspaper momentarily at the very least.

2. Be as indecisive as her, as this create empathy.

3. Importantly, ask her which dress she prefers.

4. This is the most important step: ask her why she prefers one dress over the other.

5. Agree with her. - pg233
