Review

Life's Lessons from Mayberry is a charming and sometimes even heart-tugging little collection of timeless truths inspired by the classic sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show. Week after week, year after year, and still today in re-runs, the show teaches a singular message - do the right thing. That, along with a cadre of unforgettable characters like Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, Floyd, Goober and Gomer (who were brought to life by a very talented and somewhat underrated cast), helped form America's image of the perfect small town - Mayberry, North Carolina. That fictional village became synonymous with everyday life in a place where people were hard working, decent and honest, and genuinely concerned about their neighbors, however goofy they might be. This new book from Andy Griffith Show fans John and Len Oszustowicz, who also wrote Barney Fife's Guide to Life, Love and Self-Defense, is a treasure trove of simple messages, golden rules and valuable lessons gleaned from many of the Andy Griffith Show's best-loved episodes. A few examples: "Give children a chance... they'll teach grown-ups a lot about character. - When Opie found a wallet full of money, he gave it back to its owner; Andy, once again, had underestimated the boy." "Overestimating yourself is the quickest way to humility. -Andy thought he was the cat's meow, but he soon learned otherwise when he was outdone at the shooting range...by a woman." "A person doesn't necessarily need to be efficient to be effective. -When Wally fired Gomer for doodling on the job, he realized that it was Gomer's humor and friendliness that made the business a success, not his efficiency." Baby boomers and their parents with whom they often watched the show for many years on Monday nights will particularly enjoy these reminders about basic principles and the importance of kindness inspired by this important piece of American pop culture. -- From Independent Publisher

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Life Lessons from Mayberry., July 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life's Lessons from Mayberry: A Book of Wisdom and Wit from America's Favorite Small Town (Hardcover)
The book "Life Lessons from Mayberry" is an excellent choice for any fan of the Andy Griffith Show. This book gives direct quotes from the show and also sums up the episode that the quote originated from. It also contains pages of a dialogue between two characters that, just like the quotes, give a lesson to learn from. I suggest this book to any reader who : 1) enjoys Andy Griffith shows & 2) needs any direction or support in their life. Good Reading to ya!

1.0 out of 5 stars It Ain't Worth the Pain, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Life's Lessons from Mayberry: A Book of Wisdom and Wit from America's Favorite Small Town (Hardcover)
The concept for this book is excellent. The Andy Griffith Show is full of life lessons to be drawn and shared. The content of the book, however, was miles short of Mayberry. Many of the "lessons" lacked a clear connection to an episode, leaving me to figure it out for myself. To quote Briscoe Darling, this book "ain't worth the pain."
