4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of good ideas and a few misses, too, December 20, 2009

This review is from: Life's Little Treasure Book of Christmas Traditions (Life's Little Treasure Books) (Hardcover)
If it takes you ten minutes to read this book, you're obviously distracted. The book is only about three inches high by two inches wide, and the writing is large enough so that most pages have about seven lines or so. But, of course, the word "little" is in the title of the book, and it was definitely not intended to be War and Peace. What you get are lots of little ideas for celebrating Christmas along with a few verses of Christmas carols and even a snippet of A Christmas Carol. Most of the tips strike me as good ideas that require little planning or expense. For example, "Put something Christmasy in every room of your house" or "Wear outrageous Christmas socks."

There are a few suggestions I question, though. The book suggests that we "watch Albert Finney in Scrooge." I would instead recommend the 1951 version with Alastair Sim . A more serious suggestion is to send anonymous cards to people in nursing homes who get little mail. Obviously, the book's figurative heart is in the right place here, but I should think that personally visiting with a small gift might be so much more rewarding, both for the recipient and the giver. But here I'm quibbling. For the most part, this "little" book is filled with good ideas.
