Great shed; come ready for work!, January 7, 2012
This review is from: Lifetime 6414 11- by 3.5-foot Garden and Tool Storage Shed (Lawn & Patio)
I'm VERY PLEASED with the quality, features, and durability of this shed. We bought this shed plus a 2.5' expansion kit.
Advice: #1. WATCH THE VIDEO and READ THE MANUAL in its entirety before attempting to put this shed together. We read parts, and then I got impatient and started building which required us to go back and do a few things over. Would have been better off having read the whole thing FIRST.
#2. Be prepared for work. This was a fun project except we didn't plan for enough time and I was fighting to get it done before the Packers played. That made the last hour or two miserable knowing I was missing my favorite team's big game. Had we read the entire instruction manual, I think we could have accomplished this job in 8 hours. The re-work and "stop and read the directions" time caused it to take about 10.
#3. Inventory your parts. I made the (FALSE) assumption that since the boxes were sealed, everything must be there. We were missing a window frame. Although we were able to get everything together and install the last window when it came, if we were missing a critical part like a truss or panel, this would have caused serious problems. Make sure your parts are there before you start building.
#4. Have lots of spare batteries available for your screw guns (recommend at least 2 - this is not a one person job) and don't use a cheap one without a quality clutch. The screws go in very easily and can strip very quickly if you're not using a good screw gun (drill) with a very light clutch setting. I can't imagine the thought of putting all of these screws in without one. There must be thousands!
#5. Make absolutely sure you have the floor exactly where you want it before you put the panels in. Once that first panel snaps in and you move to the second, you're stuck with your floor position. Our shed was off by 1/2" or less, but it's going to stay that way - there's no going back once you start adding the panels.
#6. Have a detail oriented person available to assemble the skylights. The manual shows this as happening towards the end of the build - THEY'RE WRONG. The skylights are a real pain to put together but if someone is working on them while you're constructing the main shed, they won't slow you down.
#7. Take a few pictures as you're building. It's really amazing to see the transformation from bare concrete pad to really nice shed in about a day. We really wish we'd have taken a few pictures of the skeleton as it went up.
We looked at both traditional wood sheds and other brands, but settled on this one mostly because of the excellent reviews we saw online. I was a bit hesitant thinking initially that this would be a "money saver" over a traditional shed. In the end, I don't think it was much of a money saver, but I'm glad we went with vinyl. We live on a fairly large lot with lots of critters; they dug all through our previous shed and I don't think they're going to be the same trouble with this poly shed.
Also impressive is the inside shelf capacity. There is tons of room for both the shelves that come with the kit, and expansion shelving that the company sells. We got a few extra sets and it's amazing how much extra space they create. The roof has a very high peak and there's also quite a bit of storage between the trusses where you can keep things like 2x4's etc.
Finally, this thing looks good. We had a little problem with the window panels color not matching the rest of the shed, but the company took care of us by sending new panels and a shelving kit to make up for our trouble. Taking the panels down is no small chore, so I was really pleased that Lifetime understood this and gave me a nice little "sorry for the mix-up" gift. We haven't replaced the panels yet (will wait for Spring) but once we do this shed will be a fine piece of construction that we're proud of in the back yard.
I hope we won't have to buy another shed for a very long time, unless something drastically changes - we'll put up another lifetime.
