Product Description

You will receive 2 teaspoons of live active grains with very simple instructions. Here is a brief description of water kefir: Tibicos, also known as tibi, water kefir grains, sugar kefir grains, Japanese water crystals and California Bees, are a culture of bacteria and yeast held in a polysaccharide matrix created by the bacteria. As with kefir grains, the microbes present in tibicos act in symbiosis to maintain a stable culture. Tibicos can do this in many different sugary liquids, feeding off the sugar to produce lactic acid, alcohol (ethanol), and carbon dioxide gas which carbonates the drink. Tibicos are found around the world, with no two cultures being exactly the same. Typical tibicos have a mix of Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, Pediococcus and Leuconostoc bacteria with yeasts from Saccharomyces, Candida, Kloeckera and possibly others. Lactobacillus brevis has been identified as the species responsible for the production of the polysaccharide (dextran) that forms the grains. People who do not wish to consume dairy products may find that water kefir provides Probiotics without the need for dairy or tea cultured products, like kombucha. Since the finished product, if bottled, will produce a carbonated beverage, it provides an alternative to sweet soda drinks for children and adults. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm so glad I discovered water kefir! Just add water and a little sugar (I use rapadura) let it sit for 2 days and you have a half gallon of probiotic slightly fizzy drink. It can then be flavored to make lemonade, ginger ale or just add some organic fruit juice. My family loves it and I have a batch going all the time. Half gallon canning jars are perfect for this. I cut up an old dishtowel to fit the top and fastened it with a rubber band. You don't want an tight lid, because it needs to breathe while fermenting. You'll also need a wooden spoon for stirring. It seems metal and kefir cultures don't get along. This is a very economical treat, as the grains can be used over and over. Follow the simple directions included and you are all set. You can read all about the benefits of this and other health beverages like kombucha and beet kvass in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. This book truly changed our lives. Thanks Sally, and thanks to Cultures For Health for making these products available.

It's amazing I could have reached this vast age (almost 68) without ever hearing about water kefir! It is fantastic. Those little crystals I got from this seller have multiplied like crazy. I figure it only costs me about 50 cents a half gallon to make this delicious drink and it can be flavored many different ways. I like ginger myself, but you can also use concentrated cherry juice or dried fruit. (You can use water kefir grains in canned coconut milk also.) What I think gives it even more health benefits is putting an inch or two of Kombu in the jar as it's brewing. Kefir grains seem to appreciate all the minerals that seaweed has and it doesn't affect the flavor. Amazon has that too Eden Kombu, 2.1-Ounce Packages (Pack of 6) I use 1/2 gallon mason jars to brew it in and just put the plastic cap (you can get at Walmart) on loosely and brew it 2 days. After straining it into bottles, I let it sit on the counter 1 more day before refrigerating it. I use Turbinado sugar (Sugar in the Raw). Walmart sells it for 2.88 for 2 lbs. which is over 900 grams. I measure 100 grams into each half gallon (which is just shy of a half cup) so that I can get 9 half gallons of kefir from one box of sugar. That's about 33 cents and I figure the flavoring and Kombu make it up to about 50 cents. Anybody who is hooked on soda ought to give this a try. It's very refreshing and seems to make everybody that's tried it want more. The biggest expenses are the jars and bottles, but you'll use those over and over. I've given away a lot of grains and it looks like I'll never give out. You only have to buy them once, and you don't even have to do that if you know someone making it already. They just keep multiplying.

Prior to purchasing water kefir grains from Lifetime Kefir, I had been making water kefir for about 6 months. I purchased my original grains from Cultures for Health. Adding water kefir to my diet yielded such positive results that I was anxious to share my grains with family and friends. Although I was producing good quality water kefir, my grains would not multiply. I tried everything to boost them and ended up ordering more grains from Cultures for Health three different times so I could share. I decided to try a different vendor hoping a different strain would help. I received the grains last week and within 6 days the amount has tripled! I am so pleased with the health and quality of this product! Thank you Lifetime Kefir. I may never need to order grains again!

Thank You =)
My Kefir Grains came in earlier than expected... Christmas Eve.. Wonderful! Live Grains so I got started Right Away... Took the grains a Couple Of Brews for them to get use to their new home ;) Within a Week they doubled in size and amount. I didnt drink the brew of the first couple of batches.. *thats 'me' though* Give them time ;) And what a great drink.. Now I have Soo Many.. *So Happy* I Did research before purchasing these grains... So what may not work one way, try another... then wait for them to take off... Spring Water works best.. raw sugar any form... dehydrated fruits *unsulphured* they love to eat ;) After Reading... then having them is just an awesome thing to see... then to know what it helps the body do... Amazing! Thanks Again..

Had these for about 6 months and really put them through the wringer, but they have been a bunch of little troopers. It took a couple of weeks and several batches of kefir to really get them going and produce a drink that had its fizz on, but since then, they have hung in there, even when I wasn't as nice to them as I should have been (basically forgot them on the kitchen counter for a week when I left town for Christmas), and for a couple of weeks I was hardly ever home and just didn't have time to mix up their fresh sugar water and strain them like I should have (every 2 or 3 days, I would just add a couple of tablespoons of sugar before running out the door in the morning), but after properly caring for them the last week or so, they are bouncing right back. And I have noticed a difference health-wise when I drink the kefir on a regular basis. A very good purchase.
