LIFETIME PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELLNESS was the first book in the field to cover both fitness and wellness in the same text. Now in its Ninth Edition, this proven text -- with its uniquely strong emphasis on using behavior modification techniques to achieve healthy lifestyle habits -- has been praised across the country for its ability to help students realize their highest potentials for health, fitness, and well-being. Each chapter guides students in developing a personalized fitness and wellness program by allowing them to chart and update their progress as they meet their goals. The Hoegers integrate activities throughout each chapter (instead of at the end of chapters) so students can complete each fitness and wellness experience as the concepts are introduced. It doesn't stop there! Three powerful resources -- the PROFILE PLUS 2007 CD-ROM, PERSONAL DAILY LOG, and INFOTRAC COLLEGE EDITION -- are all automatically packaged with this edition of the Hoegers' text! PROFILE PLUS gives students unprecedented flexibility in making lifestyle changes by providing additional assessments, a behavior change plan, nutrition analysis tools, and exercise logs and prescriptions. It also includes interactive quizzes to help students master and remember the concepts presented in the text. A PERSONAL DAILY LOG allows students to track their progress toward goals they may set for themselves. Included also are suggestions for achieving test success, a variety of records and tables to track fitness activities such as body composition, body mass index, aerobic and strength training logs, and much more! INFOTRAC COLLEGE EDITION provides students with additional resources for obtaining information about topics discussed in the course. This all inclusive package gives students a wealth of tools to help them explore, experience, and better understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

About the Author

Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger is a full-time professor and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at Boise State University. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is the recipient of the first 2004 Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University. Dr. Hoeger uses his knowledge and experiences to write engaging, informative books that thoroughly address today's fitness and wellness issues in a format accessible to students. In addition to LIFETIME PHYSICAL FITNESS AND WELLNESS, he has written several other textbooks for Wadsworth – Cengage Learning, including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Physical Fitness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). Dr. Hoeger was the first author to write a college fitness textbook that incorporated the "wellness" concept and introduced the principle that to truly improve fitness and health and to achieve wellness, a person needs to go beyond the basic health-related components of physical fitness. As an innovator in the field, Dr. Hoeger has developed many fitness and wellness assessment tools, including fitness tests such as the modified sit and reach, total body rotation, shoulder rotation, muscular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and soda pop coordination tests. Proving that he "practices what he preaches," at 48, he was the oldest male competitor in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He raced in the sport of luge along with his 17-year-old son Christopher. This was the first time in Winter Olympics history that father and son competed in the same event.

Sharon A. Hoeger is the vice president of Fitness & Wellness, Inc., of Boise, Idaho, and a coauthor of five of the seven Hoeger fitness and wellness titles. She also is the author of the Profile Plus software that accompanies the Hoeger/Hoeger series of fitness and wellness textbooks. Her innovations in this area since the publication of the first edition of Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness set the standard for fitness and wellness computer software used in this market today. Husband and wife have been jogging and strength-training together for over 28 years. They are the proud parents of five children, all of whom are involved in sports and lifetime fitness activities. Their motto: "Families that exercise together, stay together." Sharon Hoeger received her degree in computer science from Brigham Young University, graduating magna cum laude and completing the degree in only three years.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an eye opener!, November 19, 2009
By
JM (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness (Paperback)
This book was the assigned reading for my Health and Fitness class. I've read nearly the whole book and was blown away with the wealth of great information it contains. It lays everything out in a way that's very easy to understand and follow. It covers everything from how to really eat to how to exercise in ways that will increase your lifespan and make it enjoyable. One of the greatest accomplishments of this book is making you grateful you read it, and excited to adopt lifetime health and fitness improvements.

One thing I should mention about this book: This is considered a school textbook, which is why it is so expensive (boo for price gouging). It is a fantastic book that everyone should read though, in my opinion. This is the 9th edition of the book, published in 2006. There is a 10th edition that came out in 2008, and an 11th edition coming out in January, 2010. My assumption is that the differences are minor, since the lessons the book covers are basic essentials to health and fitness, and I doubt they change every two years like the fad diets do. It seems more likely that the book is simply updated to reflect more current events as it shares examples from the media and current events (and probably to make more money for the author). Personally, I picked up this book for ten bucks used on e bay. It may be worth it to you to search around a bit before buying this at full price. Also, this book comes with a CD and nutrition/fitness log pages, plus every page in the book is perforated so they can be easily removed. If you're considering finding this used, make sure to pay attention to these specifics. I haven't used the CD, so I really can't comment on it either way.

Again, this is not a suggestion for a fad diet or workout. This book helps give you the tools to adopt a nutrition and fitness plan that is lifelong. I only wish I could have read this book when I was a teen; I'd be much healthier than I am today. Regardless, I will be much healthier from now on.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fitness for Boredom, September 25, 2007
By
Josh of Sound (Springfield, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness (Paperback)
Experience with book: 30 days
Pros: Well-illustrated, detailed, informative
Cons: It's a fitness book

I have little authority upon which to base this review, having barely read it for my 2 credit-hour course. I therefore have few negative or positive statements to make about it, except that it is a great resource for beginning a personal fitness program, or just staying educated on the subject over time.
