Editorial Reviews

Lifted is the story of Henry, a middle school student in Alabama, who finds refuge in music from the challenges of his surroundings: a drug addicted mother, a Reservist father recalled to active service in Afghanistan, the financial stress of a Reservist s pay, a racist, redneck grandfather, and bullying schoolmates. A singing competition provides Henry the vehicle for his personal triumph.

As a military veteran and military brat myself, I was looking forward to this movie coming out. It is a movie that displays an ignored subject in our society - the military family and their sacrifices. What most people don't understand in America is that every person in a military family serves this country. Wives, husbands and children of military veterans sacrifice on a daily basis so that we all can live free and in peace. This movie is a great example of the strain and sacrifices that military families experience when their hero has to be away for a long extended period of time or worst pays the ultimate sacrifice of dying. I really enjoyed this movie. It had a great story line and is inspiring. The boy in the movie has a voice like an angel. I always have a soft spot in my heart for military brats. For you civilian fokes, a military brat is a child whose parent serves in the military. Another thing I liked about this movie is that it provided a good example of drug addiction and how an addict struggles on a daily basis to stay sober. Lastly, this film was done at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the surrounding area. A place dear to my heart and a place that I called home for many years. Great movie!

The movie has Ruben Studdard, so when I found it listed on On Demand I choose to watch it. There was no warning about how many tears a viewer would shed. Still, the movie is a feel good story about people who, having been tested by fire, find themselves stronger and filled with new purpose.

Wonderful music and a well acted/told story captivated me from the beginning to the end. Familiar sights in Alabama and the local dialect used in the film was nice. I am ordering copies of this movie for myself and family.

I bought this movie because my brother was in Todd Simpson's band (MOJO child, bass guitar player!!) and he told us about the movie and I ordered it. I received it today. I had a hard time with the acting at first, but let me tell you, by the middle, it was a movie that I will definitely watch again and again. It made me shout out "What!" at one point and from that point on, I was glued to my dvd player and cried!! This is a movie I will tell people about for a long time. Very good and very uplifting. You won't be sorry you bought this one.

One of the BEST movies that I have seen in a very long time. Do not be alarmed by what might seem as a film made with a limited budget. This movie has depth and meaning. ! 'Henry' (Uriah Shelton) ..... well this kid is just phenomenal. His acting is good, and i thoroughly enjoyed the music. Most of the music includes some freestyling with lyrics that are very in tune with the issues of today. Very moving. When I introduced this film to my students in class I started by saying that I know that you will like this / enjoy this film. The film includes the issue/s of domestic abuse, drug/alcohol addiction, homelessness, separation (military), bullying, and death to name a few. I know what you are asking, 'How can this be a good movie? Well just watch it and see. Additionally, it includes, love, relationships, competition, fun, music, etc. Just when you think the film is over, there is a surprise. The students in all my classes enjoyed the film. I have seen the film a dozen times in the past two weeks. I still shed tears today. I have purchased three copies of the film ' Lifted' just so that I can share it with friends and family. I Highly recommended watching this movie!! Bring tissues!

An unexpected winner, this movie is well worth watching for its message alone. Decent acting and amazing singing doesn't hurt, but really the movie is all about the message concerning the sacrifices of the men, women, and children in the Armed Forces. To any who wish to disparage this movie, I only hope they are at least grateful to, and for, those who paid the price (and continue to pay) for their freedom to do so. Excellent, excellent movie that more people should watch.

Alabama should be proud of this film and the United States of America should be proud of all heroes...especially the fallen.
At the end of the movie, politics are forgotten and the only words left are "Thank you to those who serve and have served. I hope and pray you receive the proper thanks at the proper time--during this life and the next (this includes men, women, and especially the children.)"

Great movie! Movie shows what many military family are experiencing in this century. This movie will move you and bring tears, but I will watch it over and over! My kids (ranging in age from 10-13) loved the movie as well.

Lifted is an unexpected treasure. A small independent film with a gigantic heart. I had streamed this on a whim and was nothing short of captivated and deeply moved.

The story of a bullied little boy with the gift of song, his struggle to accept his fathers call back to Iraq - his mothers battle for sobriety and his uncanny ability to connect to the people he loves through song.

Lexi Alexander directs with a competent hand and clear vision - and despite a few moments of deliberate pulls at emotion - the film has a quiet elegance and profound beauty that both pulls at your heart strings and lifts your spirit.

The cast is sensational - not a weak performance to be found. But the film belongs to young Uriah Shelton - he owns the screen and steals your heart. The entire cast is nothing short of outstanding. Dash Mihok is phenomenal as the father and the performance of the mother played by Nicki Aycox is nothing short of fearless and brave.

Just a jewel of a little movie with a boundless spirit and profound beauty.
