Book Description

October 6, 1997
The companion to the Publishers Weekly bestseller Angels Watching Over Me.

This inspirational novel follows the story of Leah and her friendship with the Amish family she met while hospitalized for cancer treatment.  When Leah takes a summer job near their Amish community, she is happy to be near Ethan again.  He is now at the age at which an Amish young man is allowed a taste of non-Amish life before committing to the adults' rules.  Will Leah and Ethan's feelings for each other overcome family obligations?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-In this novel by Lurlene McDaniel (BDD, 1997), Leah spends her summer working in a bed and breakfast inn rather than sailing to Fiji with her mother and her latest husband. The inn is near the home of an Amish family who befriended her while she was in the hospital being treated for bone cancer in this novel's prequel, Angels Watching Over Me (BDD, 1996). Leah has a special fondness for the son, Ethan. The story develops along the theme of two teenagers trying to create a bridge between two very different cultures. Will Leah be able to assimilate to the Amish culture, or will Ethan be willing to leave his own lifestyle? The choices are difficult and the pressures from family are strong. This emotional novel will appeal most to teenage girls who can identify with the culture clash. The characters are realistic, and the problems they face will be understood by most teenagers. Actress Kate Forbes is an interesting reader who doesn't use different voices, but it is easy to tell which character is talking. Between the descriptive passages and the voice of Kate, listeners can imagine the scenes in the mind's eye. This novel provides an interesting, thought-provoking look at the life of Amish teenagers and the issues they face in relationships with teenagers outside their tight knit community.-Sandra L. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, June 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lifted Up by Angels (Mass Market Paperback)
Lifted up by Angels is one of the best books I have ever read. It's one of those stories that's romantic, but isn't so mushy it makes you sick. Unlike most teen books, it actually relates to the real problems of today. It gives you an insight of how hard it is to have cancer, not dumb stuff like, "Omigosh! I have a huge zit before prom! My life is ending!" The story of Ethan and Leah also takes you into the world of the Amish. I've actually learned a lot about their culture from the book. Anyway, read it for yourself, only you can judge a book to your tastes. Also, were some of you people reading a different book called Angels Watching Over Me? The only reason Leah met Ethan is because Rebekah, Ethan's little sister, was Leah's roomate for her hospital stay when she got bitten by a brown recluse spider. Rebekah never had cancer and, as most of you know, never will. Pay attention when you read :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A compelling story, December 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Lifted Up by Angels (Mass Market Paperback)
Lifted Up By Angels by Lurlene McDaniel was one of the best books that I have ever read. The story of Leah Lewis-Hall was one of the most heart-throbbing stories that Lurlene McDaniel has written. Leah was diagnosed with cancer in the previous book and while she was was in the hospital she met a girl that was also diagnosed with cancer. Rebekah Longacre is an amish girl that stayed with Leah in the hospital. Rebekah has an older brother named Ethan and an older sister named Charity. Rebekah looks up to Leah as her best friend because they share the same problem, cancer. A problem that only victims understand the pain of. Because of Rebekah, Leah meets Ethan. Leah and Ethan form strong feelings for each other, but the only problem is Ethan is Amish and Leah is English. Also, Ethan's father does not like the idea that Leah is "English". Charity is Ethan's sister, and Charity and Leah become very close friends. Charity helps Leah understand the complications of her Amish family, and also helps Leah understand Ethan. This story takes place in the 90's in a little town called Nappannee. Leah has come up to this town for the summer to work and also to see Ethan, whom she hasn't seen since the stay in the hosipital the previous year. As Leah entered the barn, with Charity by her side her heart began to beat. She realized while gazing up at Ethan in the hay loft, the real reason she came to Nappannee was to see him. She had longed to see him since the last time they were together. As Ethan saw Leah he descended the ladder, and a very nervous Leah glanced back toward Charity for moral support. But Charity had slipped away to leave the two alone. While Leah was gazing at him, Ehtan expressed his feelings by quoting "My eyes have have been hungry for the sight of you." Leah began to tremble at her knees because of the excitement that overcame her as she heard these sweet words roll from his lips. This scene in the book is one of my favorites because it shows the amount of feelings the two characters have for each other. By knowing this, the pace of the book was set for me and also an idea on what the book was going to be dealing with. I would reccommend this book to romantics and people who enjoy a heart-throbbing read. This book is filled with emotions, suspense and a great story line. The reading isn't difficult but the emotion put into this book makes this a great compelling story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heart so fragile but yet so strong, October 3, 2003
By
KM (Hilo, HI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lifted Up by Angels (Mass Market Paperback)
Love is a very powerful thing and that's what this book is all about. If you like romance this is the perfect book for you. Religion plays a big part in Leah Lewis-Hall's life. She believes that love conquers all and in some cases it does.
"A heart so fragile but yet so strong." Everyone's heart is fragile but it's also strong. Leah stood her grounds for the strong love that she has for Ethan. Their feelings for each other are so strong that it conquered everything. To them, nothing else mattered. Their hearts were lifted by angels. They believed in many things and when they asked for help they got it. As you read this book you will understand more about the concepts of life and maybe it will help you understand the steps of love and a relationship. As I read this book I did not want to put it down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Just always remember that there is always a guardian angel there for you no matter what choices you make in life.
