Short and simple, this product works. Granted, the application for smartphones is a little bit on the clunky side, but it is well worth the investment. The negative reviewers are a perfect example of why this product isn't sold on the Liftmaster website. It only works on certain doors and even then, you need a very basic understanding of connectivity. Many don't have that and blame the product when it is the type of door they are using it on. If you want this product to work on just about any door, you can do what I did. I have a Liftmaster door opener that doesn't use security plus or MyQ. Simple solution. Purchase the LiftMaster 888LM Security+ 2.0 MyQ Wall Control Upgrade. Just search Amazon for 888LM and there you go. Install the new wall control first, then program the 828LM to the wall control. Took me just over 10 minutes to install both and have it working on my smartphone. Works like a charm.

I bought two Chamberlain WD832KEV openers for my Garage. The Chamberlain and Liftmaster (same company) openers do not include the internet gateway device which is critical. Even if they say they come with MyQ and show a smartphone on the box you still need to buy this to make it work.

Chamberlain says you need the Chamberlain CIGBU gateway, but I quickly realized the Chamberlain and Liftmaster gateway devices are identical. I called Chamberlain customer support and, though they were reluctant, I finally proded them into admitting that it was the identical device with a different logo painted on it.

I bought this, hooked it up, and it's been working perfectly with my openers and Android smartphone ever since. And yes, you can hook up multiple openers to one (or multiple) smartphones with a single gateway. I think I read it will handle up to 3.

Note that you can also install either the Chamberlain or the LIftmaster app from the appstore on your smartphone... it doesn't matter which. They are the same system with two different logos on it and either will work with either openers and either gateway.

Liftmaster is no longer charging an annual fee to use this device and app. I have this working on my Android, Apple, and Blackberry devices. This eliminates buying extra remote controls for your garage door opener. I'm now looking forward to adding the remote light switch devices to this internet gateway device.

I had a new garage door installed today and decided to get this device despite the negative reviews. All I can say is, it works extremely well. It didn't take me very long to setup (I have a wiring closet, and just added it to an empty port on a bridge) and basically you just create an account, add a location (like Home), and then Add a Device by pressing the Learn button on the opener. It could not have been easier. I did it from a laptop near the opener because you only have three minutes from the time you press the Add button to the time you can press Learn, and I didn't feel like running down and then back to confirm that the device added. It would be nice if in the future you could add the opener from a mobile device like an iPhone, but the instructions were quite clear (at least on my version) that it had to be done from a computer. Once the opener was paired with the gateway, the lights changed on the gateway to signify a device was added, and the door showed up on my iPhone. Works great, highly recommend!

I think some of the 1-star reviews on this item are from people who didn't do their homework ahead of time to make sure their door opener is compatible. I agree with some reviewers it's not the most user-friendly setup but it's far from difficult if you can read. The product works exactly as advertised and works well. Could the interface/design be improved? Sure. The annual fee was dropped some time ago so it's now a much better value.

When I shop online for ANY tech device I always read most one-star reviews and make sure there isn't issues that may affect my purchase. If it sounds shaky, I call the manufacturer or vendor before buying to clear things up.

As to why one person was told it won't work on a DSL connection baffles me. The type of connection has nothing to do with the device working or not. If you can access the internet through your router/modem it should work. Theoretically it could even work over a constantly-connected dial-up.

As to the recommendation to make it just a wifi wall plug I think I know why they chose the method they used. Many people's wifi router barely reaches the garage with a reliable signal. As an IT person I see the short range of most home wifi setups with many people complaining they can't get a good signal even upstairs, 2 rooms away, etc. They operate in the 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz frequency which usually has a hard time penetrating walls, especially exterior walls. The higher the frequency usually means less penetration through obstructions. Garage door remote openers (after 1997) operate in either 310, 315, or 390 MHz frequency ranges. At this low of frequency they can travel and penetrate better.
