Book Description

April 30, 2006
In January 1939, Antonio Machado would cross the border from Spain to France accompanied by his mother, traveling, as was his custom, with only the essentials. He died three weeks later in the small French town of Collioure, his appalling state a warning sign of his impending passing. Machado was sixty-four. Ian Gibson, internationally renowned Hispanist, has dedicated years of research and work to give us Machado’s life story –a passionate journey through the private life, philosophy and work of a man who is considered today one of the most read and loved Spanish poets of all times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelling Light (Ligero de Equipaje) a biography of Antonio Machado by Ian Gibson, November 16, 2011

This review is from: Ligero de Equipaje: La Vida de Antonio Machado (Hardcover)
Ian Gibson is well known as the definitive biographer of Federico Garcia Lorca. His knowledge and impeccable research into his subjects ensures his place as one of best biographers writing today. Now the magnificent piece of work which is his story of Antonio Machado. His long residence in Spain also euips him with a profound understanding of the Spanish culture of our time and that of his subject matter. I love Machado's poetry and found Gibson's understanding of Machado's poetic style and content added much to my appreciation of it. He weaves historical and personal detail in an easy to read manner and although the book is a large work it is never a daunting task. I was able to follow Machado's times in Segovia, Soria and flight as a refugee from Franco's regime over the border to Collioure where he is buried. Following his story created a "map" for part of our journeys in Spain in 2008 and 2010.This is a book not just for scholars but for those who enjoy a very satisfying read.
