Not his best, but still amazing, July 21, 2011
This review is from: Light in August: The Corrected Text (Vintage International (Pb)) (Hardcover)
William Faulkner is my favorite author. I haven't read all of his novels, but I've read most. My favorite is Flags in the Dust (not Sartoris!). If you're beginning to read Faulkner, read Flags in the Dust first. It has a handful of characters that reoccur throughout his other novels, and to be honest, it excites me to be reacquainted with old characters, especially the ones I adore like Horace Benbow.
I am not going to give a great review, because I am quite bad at this. But I just want to say that this book is amazing. Faulkner is tough to read, but it's rewarding when you do finish a novel of his. I have read Light In August three times, just now finishing it for the fourth time. I have only read the Vintage International version, so I am not sure how it compares to others.
It's about a couple different characters whose lives intertwine.
Lena Grove is searching for the father of her unborn child, traveling on foot and wagon from Alabama to Mississippi, pregnant and all. She is determined and sometimes very annoying and stubborn. When she arrives in Jefferson, she meets Byron Bunch, an ordinary saw mill worker who is immediately infatuated with her. He is reluctant to tell her where the man she is looking for lives or where he could be found, scared to have her find out what a piece of garbage he is.
Joe Christmas is a mulatto man whose violent actions are a cause of his troubled past and racial insecurity. He is the main character, and I don't want to spoil anything for you. He is quite a character, I'll tell you that.
There are tons of back stories to be read in this story that helps you understand why the characters act the way they do. If you have read Faulkner before and want to read another classic, this one is awesome. I also recommend Sanctuary, Flags in the Dust, and As I Lay Dying.
Please don't leave rude comments, I am terrible at reviews and no one had a review up for this yet.
