Editorial Reviews

Cloud Cults eighth studio album, "Light Chasers" is due out September 14th via it's own imprint Earthology Records with distribution via The Rebel Group & RED. The latest full-length draws most of it's inspiration from the joy (and worries) of rebirth - Craig (singerlsongwriter) and Connie (live painter) welcomed a healthy baby boy into their lives this past fall - after a long grieving process of the loss of their first son Kaiden. "Light Chasers'' is a concept album that interweaves stories focused on the exploration of the mysteries of the universe, life and death. It's a 56 minute journey, with no audio breaks, that explores love and loss and searches for the light at the end of the tunnel. It also lends itself beautifully into Cloud Cults vision that albums should be seen as a whole versus the modern trend of focusing on singles.

The first song released from the new album was "Running With the Wolves,'' which came out digitally in April as part of a special Earth Day EP and was premiered on KCMP/The Current and KEXP where the song instantly found fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'the fuel is nearly spent; check the maps again' November 20, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I first listened to Cloud Cult's The Meaning of 8 (2007) and Feel Good Ghosts (2008) back then I heard the strength of that music right away but it was just a little too alternative and not beautiful enough to become a part of my favorite music. The creativity of Craig Minowa seemed overwhelming and his musical talents unquestionable but still the experimental element of the majority of his music kept it away from me. Nevertheless I was intrigued by Cloud Cult and reached for their earlier albums. Finding out about the tragedy in Craig's personal life everything started making sense. They Live On The Sun (2003), Aurora Borealis (2004), Advice From The Happy Hippopotamus (2005) are ambient experimental escapes from pain through music by artist who is not ready to leave pain behind.

Light Chasers (2010) is my favorite album by Cloud Cult. I am very attracted to the amazing concept Craig placed in front of himself and brilliantly fulfilled. More and more of his songs are not only interesting and intriguing but melodic and harmonious as well. Many of them are brilliant ideas with profound lyrics beautiful vocal line or lines and full instrumentation including strings of violins and cellos. But as soon as Craig delivers one of these acts of beauty he follows it with one of his experimental complex pieces some of us know so well by now. What I love about this album is the balance between these different forms of expression so perfectly tied together. Just when I am listening again to familiar Cloud Cult and I am intrigued but in need of beautiful melody and harmony, I receive it. The expression of lyrics by its master is as powerful as these lyrics themselves. My favorite songs of this album seem to be those most meaningful to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice! May 9, 2013

Light Chasers is a great combination of lyrics, instrumentation, and vocals. I left the CD in my Toyota Corolla's player and it's a treat to hear this album every time I drive to town. After over a month, I haven't taken "Light Chasers" out to replace it with another CD. The violin adds depth to such lyrics as "You were born to chase the light," and I enjoy the song about space travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like looking into a mirror in a lucid dream February 14, 2013

Imagine yourself. Now imagine yourself imagining yourself. You ever wondered what you look like doing that? This CD will help you figure it out. A fast tempoed and above all interesting journey into the Asking of the Ultimate Question, that will anger, confuse, and inspire you, or no money back, because I'm not paying for you to experiment with music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best yet November 10, 2012
By Doug L
Format:Audio CD
I will say that I have been a fan of this band for quite a few years. Surprisingly, for a band that has released quite a few albums - this is arguably their best. Get this and start working your way back through the discography. I am a fan of the old stuff which is why this is so surprisingly great.

If you are new to the band, check out some of the videos on the site - especially 'exploding people.

Great, yet inexplicably under reviewed. I thought it was a side project of the Flaming Lips for certain when I first heard it. But fresher and more emotional. It conveys a positivism in perhaps a fruitless search. The last song gets me every time. One of my favorite songs the last few years was "Take Your Medicine". Just realized it is this same band. Also a great mash up ridiculing Bush a few years ago. I'll buy their next album before hearing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It will grow on you September 15, 2010

I am a huge Cloud Cult fan and was very excited when I got their new CD. I must admit after listening to it once I was a little bit disapointed. BUT, the more I played it the more I liked it until it got to the point that I could not stop playing it. I highly recommend this CD, just give it a chance.
