5.0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Book about A Gentle Spirit
This book tells a simple story about a boy who makes a hard decision that is both kind and generous. This story was read to a staff of adults at our annual Christmas party and all of us sat enrapt and charmed as we listened and watched each page turn. The pictures are beautiful and the story is something that all ages will enjoy. A delightful find and one that I will...

3.0 out of 5 stars Why the Chimes Rang remake
I much prefer "Why the Chimes Rang" by Raymond Macdonald Alden as a Christmas classic with beautiful language (1909 original publish date, still being published). Seems like this is just a take off on that story with no mention of it. My 3 boys love Why the Chimes Rang. Try to find an illustrated version.

5.0 out of 5 stars My children loved it, and yours will too!, December 15, 2002
This review is from: The Light of Christmas (Hardcover)
This thin and attractive book tells the story of Alexander, a young boy who every year goes to the city of Noel to see the Christmas torch lighted. And from Noel, the light of the torch spreads out to bring the brightness and warmth of Christmas to the whole world. But this is a special year, for this year the Keeper of the Torch will choose someone new to light the torch, and Alexander doesn't want to miss it. But, when he discovers an old man lying in the snow, he knows that he must stop to help. This year Alexander, and the whole of Noel, learns a lesson in the true meaning of Christmas.

Excellently illustrated, this book brings a great Christmas lesson to young and old alike. With short text and bright pictures, it makes for some excellent bedtime reading for you and your children. My children loved it, and yours will too!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Light of Christmas, October 16, 2002
This review is from: The Light of Christmas (Hardcover)
As Christmas books come and go with each passing season, few have caught my attention as "The Light of Christmas" has. It encompasses the main idea of Christmas, which is that by reaching out to those in need, one learns the true message of why we celebrate the "Light" of Christmastime. Mr. Evans does a fantastic job by including such things as the "Light" and Santa Claus or rather Father Christmas, without pounding in too hard the message of Christ only. He does a very commendable job at combining the two, which I think would be a hard task for any author, especially with a children's book. On top of it all, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and are timeless in nature, so this book will be enjoyed for people of all ages and for many generations. This book is a must for every home!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas story with a wonderful moral!, January 17, 2005

I have a tradition of purchasing a new Christmas book for my two boys each year, which I allow them to open on Christmas Eve to read. This was my book of choice for Christmas 2004, and I was certainly not disappointed. It is the story of a young boy who has a very difficult decision to make, especially for a child. He has to decide between taking part in a Christmas event that he looks forward to every year or listening to his heart and taking care of another important situation that he has come upon. He listens to his heart and is rewarded for it in the end. A story with a wonderful moral to share with your children.

This story has become my family's favorite as well as my Sunday school class. What a beautiful way to begin the holiday and to share the true spirit of Christmas. Richard Paul Evans is blessed with writing such beautiful pieces. I recommend his other Christmas stories -- The Christmas Candle and The Spyglass.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Treasure, October 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Light of Christmas (Hardcover)
This beautiful book caught my eye as soon as I walked in the bookstore. I was extremely touched by the message that it contained. The illustrations were also beautiful. This book will be the beginning of a great Christmas tradition in my family. It falls right in the catergory of "The Polar Express". I would recommend this to everyone who finds a greater meaning in Christmas.

A beautiful victorian book that reminds us that the giving of self is the best gift we can give....Evans was able to weave "Santa" with a deeper spiritual meaning. We will be using it in a church setting....WZ

Santa is really a "Wise Man" in this story, and it's a wonderful way to teach your children the true meaning of the season. We'll be opening this one before Christmas morning. I also loved the lush, beautiful illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars he light of christmas book review, May 23, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Light of Christmas (Hardcover)
Alexander would have never dreamth in his whole life that this day would come. After setting off to Noel to see the lighting of the christmas torch he encounters an old man lying in the snow shivering. Then he stops to help him and he would have never guessed as long as he lived that this day would come.

This story takes place in Noel many years in the past. Alexander really wants to light the christmas torch, but he has to have the best gift, so he just put's the thought of lighting it out of his mind and waits for someone else to light it. Little kids would like this book because it will teach them the true meaning of christmas and they might not grow up to be as selfish as they would have.
