5.0 out of 5 stars Sound's good!, October 8, 2003

This review is from: Light Flight: The Anthology (Audio CD)
This 2002 remastered set is the last word in beautifully restored sound. At last, every note played by Jansch, Renbourn, and Thompson comes through crisp and clear, aided by the late 60s penchant for nearly complete channel separation of the instruments. Anywhere else that might be something of an annoyance, but who would *not* want to hear every note played by the two best acoustic guitarists Britain has yet produced? Not to mention the fact that Jacqui McShee's sometimes small- (or even shallow-) sounding voice emerges re-vigorated, with new depths and subtleties evident. Even the rhythm section benefits from the new clarity, with additional dimensions in Terry Cox's fine play, especially, coming to light. And with over two hours of material on the program (very nearly half of the original playing time of the five albums surveyed), the majority, at least, of everyone's favorites are covered. Last but not least, good liner notes and a good price. This one is absolutely a no-brainer!

5.0 out of 5 stars All the Pentangle the Uninitiated Needs, November 13, 2003

This review is from: Light Flight: The Anthology (Audio CD)
Regardless of the importance of Pentangle as a group, this fine compilation gives its listeners a taste of jazz-folk-blues-pop fusions in tasteful acoustic arrangements and committed performances. Jacqui McShee's crystal clear vocals blend well with her male counterparts John Renbourn and Bert Jansch; along with the virtuoso guitar-playing of Renbourn and Jansch, Danny Thompson's bass, and Terry Cox's drumming. It's easy on the ears and very, very British--very groovy combo playing!
The song selections present a good cross-section of their hits and other fine album tracks. A few are performed in concert. "House Carpenter", "Sally Go Round the Roses", "Sweet Child", "Light Flight"--they're all here! The remastered sound is exquisitely transparent.
You can't go wrong here because the music's great, the sound is great, and the price is great. I agree with the reviewer below--it's a no-brainer, especially for the uninitiated.
