5.0 out of 5 stars This is the future of hard rock/metal!!
These guys sound too good to be true, but no one ever said that there couldn't be exceptions! Yep, they are ALL under 20 years of age too. The singer/guitarist is 15, the lead guitarist and drummer are 18, and the drummer is 19. The age thing doesn't really matter to me though. The MUSIC is what matters, and these guys sure nailed it! 3.0 out of 5 stars Good Start
These guys are good to be so young, but there was a lot of studio work performed to get that sound. The jury is still out on any future greatness. However, this CD rocks a lot better than most so called "metal" bands of late. They do have a lot of influence from early Metallica and Megadeth especially with their energy and guitar work. This album is better than anything...

Every song is entertaining and has a good catch to it. Most mainstream bands today cannot go a single verse/chorus with out getting boring. These guys have found the pick of destiny, because that teenage guitar duo shred like Dave and Adrian of Iron Maiden, and Glen and K.K. of Judas Priest. God that kid can sing! If i didn't know of the band's age range, I would have thought these were an 80's underground thrash/glam group with REALLY good production. My favorite songs are Shockwave, Warriors Of Time, Live Fast Die Young, Hit The Lights (Metallica cover is amazing), Black Abyss, and Black Widow. Now don't waste any more time missing out on this band!!! Buy the album!!! It's totally worth the money. Simply amazing...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty damn impressive!!!, March 22, 2008
This review is from: Light From Above (Audio CD)
All I gotta say is this is one killer debut album...I was a teenage metalhead I admit...and this really takes me back. Black Tide really has the goods...a combination of old school metal like classic Metallica and Iron Maiden, with REALLY good catchy songwriting, add in good solos that fit and not at all wanky (solo for the sake of soloing), honest singing with a really good voice (amazing that 15 year old Gabe is the lead singer AND lead guitar player) and these kids are just a crack combo.

What's scary is that these kids are so young...why is this scary??? Not their ages...it's just that this debut album, "Light From Above" is just really good, and that because they are so young, they will come up with even BETTER albums as they get older and better as a band and as musicians...seeing how they will evolve...what's also cool is that being they are teenagers, they have this exuberance that only comes with either being young or feeling young...none of this jadedness of old...a little naivete in this world is OK...

SCARY...

But what's really cool is that this album will be looked upon as a classic debut, an underground favourite years from now, like Metallica's "Kill Em All"...people revere their "Black Album", but look to "Kill Em All" as a classic debut...same with this scorcher.

Just damn good tunes by a great young band with a cool, no BS attitude...you want to support them, take em under your wing, show em the ropes, lend em your floor to crash on, etc...

I support this band, and I am a 40 year old, former teenage metalhead, and these kids bring me back, BRAVO!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock, rock, till you drop!, May 10, 2008
This review is from: Light From Above (Audio CD)
I can't tell you how good it does my heart to find a band of young kids that embraces the powerful melodic hard rocking sound of yesteryear, and not in some cheap, gimmicky neo-ironic kind of way either (Darkness, I'm looking in your direction). Black Tide provides an electrifying breath of fresh air to the classic rock and metal sound. You can hear elements of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Scorpions, early Def Leppard, Guns n' Roses and Skid Row in Black Tide's sound, but it has an energy and edginess that keeps it from sounding dated.

2008's Light from Above is Black Tide's debut album (and on a major label, how does that happen in this day and age?). It's also the best new release I've heard all year. It's all wall to wall riffs, melodies, and solos that will make your jaw drop in amazement. Songs like Shockwave and Black Abyss will have you raising your fist for metal, and the rest of the album is just as impressive. The cover of Metallica's Hit the Lights is an appropriate homage, as that was the song a young upstart Metallica used to gain exposure on the Metal Massacre, Vol. 1 compilation.

If you've spent the last 15 years wondering where the rock went, you MUST get this album. 30 and 40-something rock fans should eat this up like candy, but I want to stress that Black Tide is no nostalgia act. This is an amazingly tight and energetic rock band that younger punk/emo/whatevercore fans should find just as compelling.

PS - If you like what you hear, you'll also want to check out some of the other up and coming bands that are bringing back real rock and metal, like Endeverafter, Airbourne, Fatal Smile, Wolf, Widow, and Icarus Witch.

2.0 out of 5 stars I tried...I really did, August 6, 2008
This review is from: Light From Above (Audio CD)
I bought this album the day it hit stores, because I thought that shockwave was an interesting song and wanted to see what these kids had. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as I expected. Granted, they're young and have a ton of time to mature musically, but I just didn't feel as drawn the the album as I thought I'd be. I will listen to anything from Alternative to country, to death metal, to power metal. However, I just couldn't get into it. I'll still be buying their next one simply because they seem promising, but unfortunately, this one didn't meet my expectations. Lastly, please don't compare them to Metallica, they are nowhere near Metallica, at least yet.

This album is better than anything Hetfield and the boys have put out since the Black album. This is the record Metallica should have made instead of "St. Anger". That being said, Black Tide is not the Greatest band of all time by any stretch. Buy it if you like 80's style metal.

I know they are young and are the next great hope for rock, but this gets boring after 3 songs. The same guitar licks over and over. They work sometimes, but a lot of stuff blows by unoticed. File under generic rock with all the other wannabes that actually got contracts you know like the "nu"metal and metalcore. It wont hold up too long. You will forget about these guys quick. Support new bands like Evile or Municipal Waste that are much better at bringing the old rock vibe back..

3.0 out of 5 stars The album art is cool, August 1, 2009
This review is from: Light From Above [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
This is not a bad album. It also is not groundbreaking or cutting edge, and definitely not the future of heavy metal. It is accessable, and radio friendly, but then again so is a lot of the new stuff from established veterans such as Killswitch, ATR, Firewind, or even In Flames. Those bands were all cutting edge at one time, and still are in many ways, Black Tide is not. But they have some decent songs, and can rock out on occassion, so I really can't say I hate it. I just prefer other bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!, March 21, 2008
This review is from: Light From Above (Audio CD)
This is the best album in the last 10 years. PERIOD. These guys are just what the metal scene needs right now. Powerhouse vocals, Face-melting shredding (TRULY creative soloing that doesn't get old), but all in an easily accessible package; SHOCKWAVE, WARRIORS OF TIME, LIVE FAST DIE YOUNG. So many hits. I've heard people say "there's nothing new here". BULLS**T. This is classic 80s Metal with a totally fresh, up-to-the-minute modern feel. These young metalheads have a great career ahead of them. BUY IT!...nuff said.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Tide CD Review:, June 27, 2008

I would have never head of this band if it wasn't for the track Shockwave on the Rock Band game. I'm an older fan of the melodic rock type of music that was huge in the 80's. Thus the reason for giving it a chance.

This CD delivers the goods pretty darned well. I like the guitar work and the vocals aren't bad either. It beats the hell out of the cookie monster vocal crap that seems to be in vogue today.

Was really surprised to find that all of them are under the age of 20 also so it would stand to reason that all they can do is get better with time. That would be a good thing with the lyrics which are geared towards the younger set at least it seems to me to be that way, and being that age should I expect anything different?

So if you like the 80's hair stuff with an edge I say check this out and I don't think you will be disappointed.
