Because of allergy to many perfumes and common cosmetic ingredients, I tried Light Mountain Color the Gray. The usual temporary hair colors, including the nice Logona natural line, which has perfume, gave me itchy red eyes, itchy skin and caused sneezing. With LM CTG, that doesn't happen. The only ingredients are powdered dried leaves of henna and indigo.

I like the natural-looking dark brown achieved with this product. I've received more compliments on my hair and appearance since switching to it, and my hair is in great condition. Another plus is as the color fades, silver hair becomes fine lightly-colored highlights, and there's no hard line when it grows out like with stronger dyes.

Light Mountain Color the Gray works well for me. If you're tempted to try it, be forewarned, though: It's at minimum a 2-plus hour, rather messy process. I've outlined the steps below.

Equipment:
Plastic gloves and bag to cover the henna pack are included in the package
Two nonmetal bowls
Plastic or wood spoon or fork for mixing
Distilled water (I've used filtered water without problem)
Face cream or olive or other oil, petroleum or unpetroleum jelly to apply to skin around hairline and prevent staining from drips
Old towel around neck for drips
Old damp cloth for drips

Steps:
1. Doing the strand test will give you an idea of timing and color intensity. It's also important if you've colored your hair before, in which case the package insert advises waiting at least a month. Do the patch test to determine if you're allergic. Natural doesn't mean nonallergenic.
2. There are 2 packets of color, a red base and the dark top color. I deviate from the instructions and mix both packets at the outset in separate glass bowls.

I have been using Light Mountain Color the Gray, light brown henna for about 7 years and was very pleased with the results. It was a great product and worked great on my hair. Unfortunately this is no longer true. The last 3 boxes that I have used have been a big disappointment. The henna used to be a coarsely ground product but now it is a powder. The instructions have changed drastically making the process extremely time consuming. And worst of all, step 2 which used to impart a nice brown color doesn't work at all. Therefore my long hair ends up being a bright orange color due to the step 1 process. I am extremely disappointed in the changes that have been made to this henna. I did call the company and they were going to check into the problem and call me back the following day. That was 6 weeks ago and I am still waiting for their call.

A little extra time, and effort, that's why 4 stars and not 5. I've researched over and over and tried mixing my own henna/indigo ingredients with different things added to it to try to get the right color and nothing worked, period. I had dark brown hair when I was younger with golden-red highlights,(now 50% gray); every time I mixed art quality henna and indigo it always came out really reddish, bluish, or somewhere in between. After about a year of experimenting I gave up and thought I'll try this stuff just to see how it turns out, (after all it couldn't be any worse than the results I was getting). This stuff works, PERIOD!, or at least the dark brown does for me. Yes it does take a lot longer if you have to do the 2 step process, and yes it is messy till you figure out the right consistency, but it works. I've been using it for about a year now and I get consistent results time after time, and my hair does look natural, and it's so thick and healthy looking! I have short hair so I found using a plastic spork, (don't laugh), with upward strokes, makes application really easy for me as I do it myself. You have to get a thick consistency or it will plop all over the place making a real mess, especially the indigo. If it runs down your forehead and neck after wrapping, you added too much water. I usually never drop a spec any more. Once done with step 2 color I wrap my head tight with saran wrap all over, cut slits for my ears to poke through, and then put a plastic cap on over that and wait about 45 minutes and rinse. After getting the majority of the color out I use cream rinse and the rest just rinses right out leaving my hair soft and shiny. I don't even worry about getting it on my skin around my hair line because it just leaves an ever so slight tint around the edge that's barely noticeable.Read more ›

For years I used prof. salon(s) & OTC/boxed home chemical hair dye kits. Until, I found out the harmful "chemical" aka 'toxic 12' items used in beauty/make up/hygiene items at "cosmetic safety database" @
[...]

So I made my New Years resolution to leave a healthier & green wise life.. I gathered up all my health/beauty/hygiene products & searched thru the database, In short, disgusted...I purged my home of all the toxic grooming items, and replaced them with healthier & safer products.
One of which was the "Light Mountain Color the Gray" Henna Product (Dark Brown-for my hair type) read more about their products, FAQ, Helpful Hints, etc here:
[...]

So, since I was experience with 'boxed chemical hair dye kits', there was a few adjustments in expectations:
1) Time- for results: the light mountain product does not provide fast results like "chemical" (boxed/salon) hair dyes. In example chemical dyes products take 20-45 minutes versus Color the gray takes 2-4 hours depending on your preferences.
2) Healthier: so far I have not had any reactions to this product, as compared to "chemical hair dyes" IE burning itching, reddness, allergic reactions, harsh chemical odors, etc. Yet, "Color the gray", does have a aroma simular to 'fresh cut grass' or other earthy-green leaf aroma. I add a few drops of essential oils (like lavender) which my husband loves.
3) Color the gray can be a lil messy at first if you are accustomed to "gel like chemical dyes", but I find using the bath tub helps, while it does not stain like 'boxed chemical hair dyes'.
