4.0 out of 5 stars Mess Kit for Boy Scout
The Light My Fire Outdoor MealKit was purchased for my son who is new to Boy Scouts. He used it on his first campout and it performed great. All the equipment is made of tough materials, you can tell it is going to last a long time. Everything stores together neatly and is a spacesaver in the backpack.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks nice, useful, but not great
I was quite excited to receive this in time for my car camping trip at Lake Isabella, CA. It was decently light and is pretty compact for what it holds inside.

However, when I started using it, I realized that it is not without it's disadvantages.

I was quite excited to receive this in time for my car camping trip at Lake Isabella, CA. It was decently light and is pretty compact for what it holds inside.

However, when I started using it, I realized that it is not without it's disadvantages.

Firstly if you eat anything liquid and try to mix it, the triangular shape will cause you to splash it's contents very easily. I experienced the same problem when cleaning - when you reach a corner, water will most likely splash out.

Clean it gently you ask? The biggest issue I had with this container though, is that the material does not clean well. I have to go over it three times with concentrated detergent just to get the smell out. Afterwards, there is still a slippery, oily feel to it. I'm not sure what is causing this, as I've purchased ultra-cheap, disposable air-tight containers that were less of a hassle.

I gave it another chance on a backpacking trip, but now I'm sure I won't be taking this with my anywhere without a kitchen sink.

Lastly, I purchased this along with a Light My Fire Titanium Spork, which I think is great, but it does not fit well inside with all the cups and containers.

All in all, it's a decent, durable, good looking container that's relatively compact, but I would not purchase another one.

I bought these for my children. they make excellent lunch kits and I am not using wasteful bags and wraps.
I also bought the harness for my son, he can hook it on his belt or backpack.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact unit, easy to carry, December 8, 2007
In my son's Boy Scout Troop, each scout (and leader) is required to bring their own eating utensils on each outing. The Light My Fire MealKit is easy to pack, use and more importantly, wash. I would recommend this item to any one who likes to eat outdoors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, Earth-friendly kit, June 2, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Like others, we picked up a few of these kits to go camping with our Cub Scout Pack. I saw all kinds of other mess kits on the trip and I'm completely happy with my purchase of these kits.

It's very convenient that everything packs into one container. The cutting board/strainer is a nice addition and very useful. The waterproof container is perfect for spices or snacks (especially since it almost always rains on our camping trips - if you're having a drought just invite us to camp near you...problem solved!). The cup is a little funky and takes some getting used to, but the lid is convenient to keep bugs and debris out of your drink.

Another bonus (for me): I can't stand eating off metal plates. The metal on metal sound drives me crazy. No worries with this kit!

Since the knife is integrated into the single utensil I ordered an additional pack of sporks (Light My Fire Spork 4-Pack). I couldn't see a way to cut food otherwise, without using my hands.

Light My Fire's customer service is to be commended. One of the kits I ordered was missing its spork. All it took was an e-mail to the company and a replacement was on its way (two, in fact).

Why fill the trash with paper plates, plastic utensils, and styrofoam cups? Get a few of these and you're set for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars I kind of like 2 plates, February 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My family and I find these meal kits to be very useful. We purchased them for an upcoming camping trip, but have been using them around the house to test them out.
After reading the other reviews, we were a little concerned about a few things, but have found that our worries were pointless.
We find the 2 plates to actually be pretty great, especially since you can use one for the main course, and one for dessert or bread or a side dish... Plus, one of the "plates" is quite a bit deeper than the other, and therefore makes a very good bowl. This may leave you wondering what to do with the other smaller bowl, and we haven't needed it yet, but I'm certain a use for it will present itself at one meal or another.
As far as the spork, I would imagine that the kits are exactly the same, (all of the 5 we received are) so I am not certain why anyone would have a problem getting the spoon part of the spork into the corner of any of the dishes. It fits fine, with plenty of room to spare, and the triangle design actually makes scooping things onto the spoon even easier than with most bowls and MUCH easier than with a normal plate. We also have not felt concerned with having to lick the spoon or fork to use the other side (you are eating off the one you have to lick anyway, right?) Using the knife part is a little bit tricky, since you only have one utensil, so you don't have anything to hold food still with while you cut it.
The cup is a little unusual and takes a moment to get used to, and it kind of "glug glug glugs" since there is no air hole/ vent opposite of the spout, but it works well, and if you are using it to measure, there are obvious indentations for this purpose.
Overall we are VERY pleased with these kits, even though we got what we think is the ugliest color -haha- (yellow) because they are so much cheaper than the other colors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Style and function, May 11, 2007
By
In this world plastic is a word synonymous with disposable, cheap, and of poor manufacture. Not so for the Light My Fire Outdoor Meal Kit. One could go through life using disposable plastic containers to take food to work on a hike, but this lacks style and isn't environmentally friendly. There are other plastic personal picnic kits, but they pretty simple and not quite as functional as this kit. The units all stack together for a compact form. The lids that are supposed to keep a seal do.

The only part that seems a little silly is the spife (spoon-fork-knife), but that's mostly because I am a spork kind of person.

5.0 out of 5 stars the envy of others at scout camping, February 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I got two of these sets for my husband and son to use on cub scout camp outs. I liked them because they're bpa free and no worries about metal contamination like some other mess kits you can buy. My husband and son enjoyed them because they're very compact and include everything you'd need. When they came home my husband said that everyone commented on how cool their mess kits were.

I bought this product for my nine-year old daughter to take with her on Scout overnights and camp. It works great -- easy to use, easy to pack, easy to clean. Having it come in a colour she likes was bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gave as gifts, got good reviews, August 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I gave these as gifts to family before one of their planned backpacking trips. The only complaint was that the bowl with markings, wasn't clearly marked for 1cup, 2cup, so they weren't sure about measurements. After they used the markings in the bowl compared to the amount of ounces they carried in a marked water bottle, they figured it out. Otherwise, both people liked the harness, the colors and said it worked well.
