Great Song,

This is great song that reminds me of all the great 80's anthemic rock songs, but with a very current sound. David Cook has a great voice. I am now curious as to what the rest of the album will sound like. Admirable first effort.

A Biased David Cook Fan,
By
This review is from: Light On (MP3 Download)
I have to preface this with, I am a huge David Cook fan and it would take a lot to make me not like anything that he puts out. This man honestly could sing the phone book and I would be very happy. Being a fan of David's pre-idol music, I was a little concerned about how he would play to the masses. But, this song is the perfect transition song. It has a message and really does show off that beautiful instrument that is his voice. It does come off as somewhat over produced, but that aside, just listen to the vocals and you can tell that he will be a force to be reckoned with. I for one cannot wait until November 18th.

David's extraordinary vocal prowess is in high gear on "Light On", as usual. His voice has so much resonance that it actually has a shimmer. It is unparalleled. It almost "rattles" with overtones! He hits high C's here, in full voice, with ease. I would have preferred one of his originals, but this is undeniably an excellent showcase for his unusually vibrant voice. I admit I am a huge fan, but that is precisely because of the very brilliance displayed here. He was born to sing - and HUGE!!! He can go from zero to 90 in a nanosecond, which is one of the many exciting things about dramatic voices like his. Great job, David! Your heart is in it, as always. You have a deep gift for interpretation and are naturally emotionally connected, which brings us IN, not unlike your posthumous mentor, Sinatra, strangely enough.
Listen to this one a few times before you make a judgment - it definitely grows on you! Upon first hearing I thought it was a bit formulaic. But no longer! David makes everything better! Even the covers he did on AI were better than the originals! Masterpieces. Nothing can stop giftedness on this level. Pure gold. My only criticism is that the instrumentation is a little loud and the effects are heavy on his voice. Let that voice's Light SHINE!!! PS - I am a classical vocalist, teacher and pianist, so this review comes from that perspective..

I love David Cook's voice, and this song shows several different sides of it. His voice, inflection, pacing, warmth, emotion really make this song what it is. It is anthemic, and I can't wait to see it live. Most of all, when the song ends, I just want to put it on continuous play to hear his voice again. That's how compelling it is.

So here's the first "real" single for David Cook, not counting the winning song from Idol. I think it does a great job of bridging that gap between TV and the real world. It's rock anthem-ic and goes for that big arena sound, with lots of guitars and a driving beat.
It's catchy as all get out and there's great use of that voice - nice range, different inflections, that unique/pretty tone. Doesn't hurt that the song was written by Chris Cornell and produced by Rob Cavallo. There's a lot going on here that can only be fully appreciated through some really good headphones -- but that doesn't stop it from being a great "driving with the windows down and the volume up" type of song too! Great start and I'm looking forward to the album, especially the tracks that David's written himself.

I love David Cook's voice! He has an amazing range and the tonal harmonics in his voice are mesmerizing. I can hardly wait for his album to come out in November to add to my collection.

This is a great song and David sounds fantastic. The song seems to use every feature of his versatile voice. I particularly love the last part where his voice is really clear and it sounds like he is in the room with you. I can't wait for the full CD to be released. Wonderful to have a new David Cook performance to enjoy--it gets in your head and stays there.

The song has a great hook which sticks in your head and lyrics with a message to which most anyone can relate.
The voice is unique and has a warm, rich tone, whether soaring on the high notes or dipping down low and whispering in your ear in the stripped down segment at the end. It has a comfortable, catchy chorus but enough unpredictability in the intro, verses, and after the bridge to keep your interest. I wish the chorus didn't have as much "noise" so I could enjoy the voice and melody more (simpler would have been a little better and it will be great done acoustically, IMO), but overall this is a 5/5 star effort. Can't wait for the album.

I was kind of shocked that David Cook came out of the box with a power ballad; I wasn't expecting that. He's got a great voice, and excellent range and the song showcases it. A little more "pure" vocal would have been nice on this in the chorus (talking to you production team) because when you have a singer the magnitude of David Cook, you gotta let the man SING! He needs no fluff and cover like so many lame pseudo singers out there today. This man, is an artist..give him a canvas and he will create a Picasso. Having said that, he makes the most of this song and emotes the lyrics beautifly and profoundly. I cannot wait to hear the new album and see what is inside his genius head.
