Book Description

New York theater actress Teresa Guzman has landed the coveted lead role in the true story of the life of a murdered prostitute, but the emotions the role evokes are almost more than she can handle. Haunted by the suffering of her character, Teresa is losing faith in men and fights not to fall in love with Joaquin Solis, a generous fan. Joaquin will have to prove his love for Teresa is genuine.

After the tragic death of her fiancé, professional singer Eloisa Morales is putting her life back together. Eloisa wrestles with the decision of whether she will ever sing again. As she tries to find her path forward, Marcos Marquez, the theater's biggest backer, is determined not to lose Eloisa and the chance for love to her grief for her late fiancé.

As the four lives intertwine, their passion for the arts and for helping women like Teresa's character will bind their lives together in a romantic and mystical journey to overcome their fears of bearing their souls and help them learn to trust, on and off the theater stage.

Light and Shadows by Estela Vazquez Perez introduces us to actress Teresa Guzman who has gotten her big break and landed a role about the true life story of a murdered prostitute. It also introduces us to Eloisa Morales, a professional singer who is working on putting her life back together after the tragic death of her fiancé. Their lives become intertwined, along with the men who are in them, Joaquin and Marcos. Light and Shadows is a romantic journey through overcoming fears and learning to show your soul so you can learn to trust.

Estela Vazquez Perez has created a beautiful story of pain, searching, and love with Light and Shadow. I could really connect with this book and the characters within because of the issues they have to overcome. Love, while a splendid thing, is not always easy to accept; we all have our battle scars from life and living and I love that neither Teresa or Eloisa are perfect but they can learn. The writing style here is rich and brings forth images that will stick with you. I love it when I feel like I can just wrap a book around myself and stay in the world it has created. It takes skill for a writer to be able to evoke that kind of emotion and Estela Vazquez Perez has that skill. I would highly recommend this book to any reader who enjoys romance with deeper plots. It is not just about the romance involved in this book; it has many layers.

From the Author

"I would like to give you my overall impression of your work: You have a terrific writing style. I can tell that you have done a ton of planning and preparation in crafting your work - especially the way you have thought out the characters and movement that happens in the story.  This is not an easy feat. Your prose is very nicely written with details that capture the reader. Right from the start your plot was very engaging and I found myself really connected with what was going on.  It is easy to have too much going on too soon - not in your case.  Your plot is slow and methodical and you use your dialogue to move the plot along.  With that being said, you really do a nice job of slowly making your way through the story with details and a certain voice (yours as the author) that allows your reader to really interact with the characters (who are all round and very nicely developed). The greatest value in fiction, it seems to me, lies in what we can learn about our own lives when we take time to analyze someone else's. Your characters are lifelike and I love it when I leave a story feeling like I know them.  You have a realistic plot and to me that makes for an enjoyable story.  Characterization is one of the most important elements of any successful story.  You did not rush or force anything.  Your manuscript is a nicely developed story that really did read like a movie in my mind. I can picture your setting - your characters.  You have crafted a quality piece of writing." Lisa Conner, Manuscript Review, Outskirts Press

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece February 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Wow. Just wow. Estela Vasquez Perez’s ‘Light and Shadows’ is perhaps the most emotionally haunting and deeply evocative novel I’ve read in a long time—it recalls other exceptional literary masterpieces I’ve always loved, like Kashuo Ishiguro’s ‘Never Let Me Go’ or even Gabo Garcia Marquez’s ‘Love in the time of Cholera’. Nevertheless, ‘Light and Shadow’ holds its own against these more established novels—I believe it is this book’s fate to have hordes of fans in the years to come.

‘Light and Shadows’ is basically about two women and two men, whose life and love intertwine and bleed into each other’s personal space. Teresa Guzman is a struggling theatre actress, and when she gets a role of a murdered prostitute, she finds it so difficult and exhausting to internalize the required emotions. She isn’t a prostitute, let alone dead, yet she can fully relate, especially with what’s going on in her love life (or lack thereof). On the other hand, Eloisa Marquez is a professional singer who loses her will to live when her fiancé dies. Hovering around them are Joaquin Solis, Teresa’s fan, and Marcos Marquez, for Eloisa. Their journey from heartache and confusion to the full blossoming of their respective love story is a breath-taking spectacle to witness.

Needless to say, Estela Vasquez Perez has written something phenomenal here—a book that deserves a much wider audience. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading an unforgettable story about love and loss, of struggle and redemption. Get a copy of this book today—I mean it. It fully deserves all the five-star ratings it gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rewards of Procrastination February 4, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is much more than a typical romance novel. While the primary focus of the story revolves around the relationships between the four main characters, this story offers sub-plots and rich character development that will hold appeal for those, like me, who don’t necessarily clamor for the next offering in the romance genre.

This author obviously did admirable and painstaking research to bring her characters and the world in which they reside to life like few other novelists have the tenacity or moxie to bother with. The engaging style of the writing and the suspenseful sub-plots are really what kept the pages turning for me, and it came as a welcome diversion during a long flight.

The omniscient narrator speaks in a historical present tense which was, at first, a bit unusual to me. This is a convention that is more common in spontaneous conversational narrative than in written literature but, as I allowed the story to envelop me in a swathe of intrigue, it seemed increasingly appropriate and it actually helped to steer my mind right to the center of the action.

I probably wouldn’t have discovered this book if I hadn’t borrowed my girlfriend’s Kindle for a business trip. I had been planning to buy one of my own but, this time, my procrastination actually yielded a positive result. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read February 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Light and Shadows is a truly heartwarming and moving story about two women who have dedicated much of their time to performing charity work in their town. Best friends for years, Eloisa and Teresa are closer than sisters and have a passion for the charity work they do. In addition, they are both accomplished and celebrated stage performers. Through a series of events Eloisa and Teresa come to know two fine upstanding businessmen in their town that have embraced the women’s’ desire to help others through their charitable work. As Eloisa finds herself struggling to come to terms with an unexpected tragedy that rocks her world, she finds strength in those around her.

This book is about the power of people helping other people. Eloisa and Teresa do everything they can to help each other and to help those around them. It shows that having a giving soul opens people up to live a more fulfilling life filled with many things to be happy about and proud of. The book conveys how strong friendships can be and how much influence those friendships have on one’s personal and professional life.

Light and Shadows is a memorable journey that will captivate your heart as you witness the personal struggles of two strong and beautiful women learning how to open up to who they truly are and what they truly want in life. Teresa and Eloisa are a fabulous example of what true `girlfriends' can really bring into our lives and the incredible bonds and connections we tend to feel towards certain people. A touching story of both--learning how to open your heart and letting go.

Ms. Perez does a beautiful job of telling the story of four wonderfully delightful characters and how their lives are seamlessly woven together. A story of love, Friendships and self-discovery that draws you in from the very beginning and keeps you mesmerized until the very end! The writing and scenes flow beautifully as well as the engaging, realistic dialogue. For me, a lot of books lose me with bad dialogue...that was not the case here. Ms. Perez pulled it off perfectly and effortlessly!

Light and Shadows resonated deep within me through the strong character development and realistic storyline. I am a Lover of pure `Realism'. I MUST connect with the characters and `Feel' their emotions but, most importantly to me, it must be believable! Sometimes our closest friends know us better than we know ourselves. I Found both Joaquin and Marcos equally enjoyable characters with much depth and instantly likeable; each character bringing their own distinct personalities to the forefront to connect with the reader. The plot was unique, well thought out and masterfully written.

In Summary: A Beautiful and Heartwarming story that would make a delightful weekend read curled up in front of a cozy fire. Excellent Work!
