Book Description

April 1, 1999
"Light in the Shadows" is written for people who are struggling with a life-threatening illness. In 20 brief selections Chaplain Hank Dunn covers some of the most important lessons for people who find themselves in these difficult situations. A sampling of the meditation titles reveal the thrust of the book: "Choosing My Response," "Giving Up and Letting Go," "Between Hope and Reality," "Quality not Quantity," and "Modern Medicine and 'the Enemy.'" This book is about finding hope in hopeless situations; being grateful in the midst of great losses; experiencing a connection to things eternal; living a meaningful life while considering the possibility of death; and getting to the root issues in medical treatment decisions.

About the Author

Hank Dunn is a chaplain with the Hospice of Northern Virginia. Previously he served as a full-time chaplain in a nursing home. His most recent book is "Light in the Shadows: Meditations While living with a Life-Threatening Illness." Hank Dunn is a graduate of the University of Florida and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Rarely do people want to talk about death and dying. This especially, and tragically, during the time when people most need to be free to talk about it: during the threat of a terminal illness. Hank Dunn's book is a sensitive and hopeful book for those living into their dying. Dunn's extensive experience as a chaplain in the presence of those who've walked that journey is evident in these meditations: insightful, honest, and hopeful. Elegant and poetic writing from the heart.
