Monahan consistently turns out some of the best art instruction books available. Here she treats the ephemeral phenomenon of light and how to capture it in the equally ephemeral medium of watercolor. Using styles that sometimes verge on the abstract, she explores light in wind, on water, in rain and fog, on architecture, in trees, indoors, and on the human figure. Ray Campbell Smith's recent Fresh Watercolour (David & Charles, 1995) is a fine study of light in landscape, but Monahan's book offers much more to work with.
