Editorial Reviews

2010 release, the 11th album from the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. Produced by Mullins and drummer Gerry Hansen, Light You Up marks a newfound level of musical and lyrical expression for the veteran artist. Shawn Mullins has undergone a series of transformative experiences leading to this captivating new song cycle. His experiences included delving into the collaborative creative process by intensive co-writing, and in one instance putting him atop of the country charts via a key contribution to the Zac Brown Band's 'Toes'. Further co-writing yielded nine of the 11 songs on Light You Up, which Mullins believes represents the strongest, most expressive writing of his distinguished career

Light You Up is the satisfying result of extensive collaboration with some of today's best songwriters, Chuck Cannon and Glen Phillips among them. Yet Mullins remains true to his own roots and signature style- his talent for connecting us to the subjects of his songs.

As with many of his previous albums, the musical style ranges from the rock-infused "California" to a soft, introspective "Blue Sky", originally recorded as part of the Thorns project; to the sultry "Light You Up"; and finally, a sprinkling of country. His current band is tight- great synergy on-stage and off. Tom Ryan's harmonies are a perfect counter-weight to Shawn's rich tones, and Patrick Blanchard continues to impress me with his nimble guitar work. You can tell these guys are having fun, making it that much more fun for the listener.

But you don't have to take my word for it: At a recent performance, Cannon noted that Shawn's interpretation of "The Ghost of Johnny Cash" is one of the few times he's been truly satified with the way an artist laid down one of his songs.

While Mullins provides enough action to sustain a casual listen, he's most satisfying when you have the time to pour yourself a cup of brew and listen-really listen-to what the man has to say.

When I heard "Light You Up" (the single), It seemed that Shawn might be returning to more of his "Soul's Core" and "Beneath the Velvet Sun" sound. I may be in the minority, but I personally have missed that "sound" in the past few albums, which seems to have been replaced with a more stripped down, less "produced" approach. I also don't think that Shawn's "slower" stuff has the same feel and quality that it has had on past albums. I understand that Shawn is a songwriter and that his skills as a musician, songwriter and vocalist are not in question, but I guess I just keep waiting for him to return to some of the musical approaches of those albums mentioned earlier. I like "Light You Up" as an album, but I don't love it. There aren't many songs I'd throw on in the truck with the windows down. I guess I'd just like to see Shawn continue to experiment, musically and not "settle down" so much. Some of my favorite songs off of his last few albums were: "Cold, Black Heart", "See That Train", and "Homeless Joe". Could we have a few more like that next time, Shawn? This album is growing on me, though, and I appreciate each song more and more as I continue to listen and let it be what it is. I will ALWAYS buy EVERYTHING that Shawn Mullins does, but I'd love to get another album from him that makes me grin from ear to ear, from start to finish. Didn't quite happen on this one.

Another good album from Shawn Mullins. This album definitely sees Shawn trying to evolve and redefine his sound and definitely feels like he was trying to expand his musical abilities. In my opinion Shawn Mullins is one of if not the finest modern singer song-writers out there whose music has the depth and integrity that is very hard to find in popular music these days, hence the massive rise in nostalga and classic artists coming back so strong.

Highlights on the album are:

California
Light you up
Catoosa County
You Make It Better
No Blue Sky
Love Will Find A Way

The rest are more miss then hit but definitely no terrible tracks. Also check out Beneath the Velvet Sky (Shawn Mullin's best album and one of my favourite albums of all time), Honeydew and 9th ward picking parlour by Shawn Mullins.

I had high hopes for this release, and am a die-hard fan. Love the title track, and there are some other good tracks here, but unfortunately found some of the other lyrics rather clunky (especially "I Knew a Girl").

I felt that this release went outside his comfort zone, however when played live, many of these songs worked. Somehow when they were laid down, they lost something, becoming Beatle-esque or overly Bluesy, or over produced, or just plain something that didn't quite gel for me.

And is it just me or does "You Make it Better" begging to be used in an automobile advertisement?

Shawn is a veteran though and an outstanding artist, so get this album for the couple of gems, buy his back catalog, and get excited about the next release.

Shawn Mullins has a GREAT voice, and there are 4 songs on this CD that I love. Light You Up is probably the sexiest song I've heard! I love it! But then there are several slow, Country Music songs that I'm just not into. I'm happy with the four good songs though.

I was not familiar with Shawn Mullins before buying this album. He is an amazing artist. Sometimes sounding a little like Tom Petty, sometimes sounding like a bluegrass performer, and sometimes just getting down to good old rock and roll.

I purchased the vinyl record and am impressed with the quality of the pressing. Very clean and on thicker vinyl. If it is not 180 gram vinyl, it is close. The music is on two records to fit it all in, and it comes with a coupon code to download an MP3 version of the album for free.

This is great stuff and I highly recommend it.
