Bit of a misleading first single, in my opinion
on October 12, 2010
When I heard "Light You Up" (the single), It seemed that Shawn might be returning to more of his "Soul's Core" and "Beneath the Velvet Sun" sound. I may be in the minority, but I personally have missed that "sound" in the past few albums, which seems to have been replaced with a more stripped down, less "produced" approach. I also don't think that Shawn's "slower" stuff has the same feel and quality that it has had on past albums. I understand that Shawn is a songwriter and that his skills as a musician, songwriter and vocalist are not in question, but I guess I just keep waiting for him to return to some of the musical approaches of those albums mentioned earlier. I like "Light You Up" as an album, but I don't love it. There aren't many songs I'd throw on in the truck with the windows down. I guess I'd just like to see Shawn continue to experiment, musically and not "settle down" so much. Some of my favorite songs off of his last few albums were: "Cold, Black Heart", "See That Train", and "Homeless Joe". Could we have a few more like that next time, Shawn? This album is growing on me, though, and I appreciate each song more and more as I continue to listen and let it be what it is. I will ALWAYS buy EVERYTHING that Shawn Mullins does, but I'd love to get another album from him that makes me grin from ear to ear, from start to finish. Didn't quite happen on this one.
