5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Medieval
This is a marvelous album. This album, while still operating within the Doom/Death sound of other MDB albums (except 34%), has a unique feel to it. One of favorite MDB songs is called Edenbeast. It reminds me of three things 1) Medieval/ancient Egypt 2) Eyes Wide Shut (when cruise walks into the masquarade ball) 3) a dark temple where weird rituals are being performed...

3.0 out of 5 stars Weak, weak...
Had this album been released by an average metal band, it would probably be the highlight of their career; for MDB, however, this is pretty weak and mediocre. Could it be that they just spoiled me with 4 (!) such outstanding masterpieces in a row ("Swans" to "34%")? The production is horrible! Despite the ocassional sparks of creativity on "She Is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Medieval, February 18, 2006

This is a marvelous album. This album, while still operating within the Doom/Death sound of other MDB albums (except 34%), has a unique feel to it. One of favorite MDB songs is called Edenbeast. It reminds me of three things 1) Medieval/ancient Egypt 2) Eyes Wide Shut (when cruise walks into the masquarade ball) 3) a dark temple where weird rituals are being performed. This song is worth buying the entire album.

But back to the album. It is true that after 34.8% complete, this is a return to the MDB everyone knows and loves. I would not say though that this album sounds like Turn Loose....or The Angel.. While it isn't as experimental, it definitely sounds more mature... This album is heavy and uses keyboards to the same and sometimes better effect than the violin used in earlier albums. In fact, the guitars prove that you don't even need the violin to deliver the kind of atmosphere which is dispondent, sorrowful, and deeply touching, which MDB do so well.

However, it is not a perfect album. While the first 4 songs of the album are fantastic, the second half leaves a lot to be desired. It's almost as if they MDB ran out of ideas. Christliar is particular plods along with no real destination.

Nevertheless, essential for anyone who likes MDB's other works and for anyone who wants a dose of good, clean, well-written, thoughtful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars EPIC MISERY, March 16, 2000
After the experimental '34.7888% COMPLETE', My Dying... has returned to their original sound. That's right, guitar riffs (HEAVY) and DEATH GROWLS and the old logo are back. Songs are still long and some tend to drag, but the actual songs and riffs are some of the best since 'TURN LOOSE THE SWANS',so it doesn't really matter, with a welcome return to misery it's a must for their fans both old and new. Fave track 'CHRISTLIAR'

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff., March 4, 2005
This review is from: Light at the End of the World (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album from MDB is very good. It is classic doom metal done almost to perfection. This album consists of a very emotional vocals/lyrics, (although Aaron does throw in some growls every now and then on this album) and slow guitar riffs/drums. The best songs on this album are The Light at the End of the World, Edenbeast, and Into the Lake of Ghosts. If you are a doom metal/metal fan, this album is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars They got back, March 27, 2001

After 34.788%, an album that disappointed loads of fans of My Dying Bride, because of the music it had, they are back now, back to the Turn Loose the Swans sound, with heavy guitar riffs and Aaron growling again. 9 master pieces again from My Dying Bride with the title track "The light at the end of the world" being one of the greatest from this album, very sad song.

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY! What took so long?, June 5, 2000

Hot damn! MDB finally came back after they bombed on 38.77777something % complete. This album is better than most of their original work. To make it the best, it would have to have Marvin in it, their old violinist. All i have to say is, "GET YOUR VIOLINIST BACK!" But seriously, this album is a very talented work of art. It, indeed, is from the music master, My Dying Bride. They made a complete comeback after that percent complete album, which, i must say, was not very good. If you are a My Dying Bride fan, I promise you will love this album!

4.0 out of 5 stars In depth listening, April 5, 2004

The Light at the End of the World was the next cd I got. The band returns to their much heavier and "doomier" sound which was along the lines of 1993's Turn Loose the Swans. The at the time of the recording, one of the guitarists Calvin had left the band so it was Andrew that recorded all the guitars. So for obvious reasons he probaly wrote more of the music and would make some sense why he feels this is the best MDB album.
This album I have found requires in depth listening. Not a cd you can just have in the background and catch glimpes of it here and there. Each song tells a fascinating story and the sounds of sorrow can be heard through each verse.
The mood can shift around alot on this release. From heavy to quiet, from slow to fast it has a very direct sound. Tracks "She is the Dark" and "The Isis Script" are some of My Dying Brides best tunes and have alot of firey energy and passion. "Edenbeast" is a long epic that can put you into a trance by Andrew's guitars and Aaron's sinister vocals. "The Light at the End of the World" is a story epic, a depressing journey into misery.Great keyboards on this song. "The Fever Sea" is a brutal track that sound best very loud. Sear me III is another fine track, very gothic and dark. The feel of the entire album makes me feel unassure about life and reality and nothing is far from the truth.

Another great release that took several listens to enjoy it more. So far I got all thier albums except "As the Flower Withers". Naturally, it will be next.

5.0 out of 5 stars the roots are the roots, March 29, 2001
Ok, first i want to thank the band for giving us the oportunity to listen again, that glorious sound of "turn loose the swans", with great compositions and great concept, simply a masterpiece of gothic-metal-atmospheric album, the power of "she is the dark" is something to be heard to be believed, and the rest of the album will take you to another dimension, a must buy for loyal fans, and a perfect experience for the new-coming fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars JUST PERFECT!!!!, November 23, 2005
By
INFESTER (Not Germany circa 1930's!) - See all my reviews
MDB came back with the death vokill's and a more ''traditional'' DOOM DEATH sound on LIGHT!!

MDB is a band that can never really do wrong I mean of course I like the early stuff better..but LIGHT is about as good as it get's..maybe their best album??? MAYBE!!

Without this you are a waste of life...MUSIC TO MAKE YOU THINK AND FEEL!!!

''THE FEVER SEA'' and ''CHRISTLIAR''..HIGHLIGHT's!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but still amazing, May 19, 2004

My first impression was after an amazing beautiful start it bogs down into mediocrity which is rare for MDB. After hearing it several times it didn't improve much and I reached the same conclusion as I did initially.
HOWEVER the first 3 tracks are beyond description and worth the price of admission into MDB's theater of pain where they will usher you into a world of majestic unrelenting darkness.
