Don't call it a spork,
By
This review is from: Light My Fire Spork (Misc.)
The "traditional" spork never impressed me much. This thing is a spoon with a USEFUL fork on the other end and a serrated knifelike bit that might come in handy here or there. Consider - the spork's obvious habitat is eating typical backpacker food when packing, typical microwaveable foodstuffs at the office, or the stuff in your wide-mouth vacuum bottle at the field jobsite. The Light My Fire Spork fits the bill to perfection.

What to say? It's a spork.,

I bought this to use with my Mr. Bento lunch kit, and I'm satisfied with it. The spoon is deep enough to be useful (larger bowl than, for example, the average plastic spoon) and the fork simply does its job. The knife edge is useful for foods that are already fairly tender (ie., tender enough to cut with the edge of a metal fork), but the limitation is that you have only a knife, not another utensil to hold the food in place (since the knife is actually the edge of the fork).
Be sure to pack a napkin, though, since it'll need a wipe when you switch between spoon and fork. The handle is a bit short, which is why I take off a star. All in all, though, it's exactly what I was hoping it would be, and I would recommend for lunch kits, etc.

A Utensil Too Far,
By fredtownward "The Analytical Mind; Have Brain... (Mocksville, North Carolina, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Light My Fire Spork (Misc.)
Light My Fire has produced arguably the best spork, fork-spoon combination, ever made; unfortunately, they were not satisfied with this and insisted on trying to make it a knife as well. This was a bad idea for three reasons. First, the smooth side of a fork is good enough for "soft" cutting. Second, the serrations are neither long enough nor sharp enough to be much good as a knife, but they are sharp enough to damage the mouth if the wielder is careless. Third, for any serious cutting you'd need a separate knife and fork anyway. All in all it would be a much better product without the poor attempt at a knife.
However, other than this minor design flaw, it is a wonder: a genuinely useful spoon paired with a more than adequate fork in an ergonomic design, made of Teflon-friendly, heat resistant polycarbonate. Of course making the other utensil the handle of the one you are using will present difficulties if you need to switch back and forth without being able to clean it first. The only other nit worth picking is that the sunken lettering of the logo on the top of the handle and the raised lettering of the abbreviation for polycarbonate on the bottom of the handle are both annoying dirt catchers, a defining case of "too much information". Still, for the purpose of substituting a single utensil for two, either in the great outdoors or the cubicle jungle, it cannot be beat! Note: These items are also available in 4-packs: Light My Fire Spork 4-Pack, and there is a slightly larger model for the "large handed" (or the "large stomached"): Light My Fire Spork XM and an even larger Serving Spork: Light My Fire Serving Spork for the main dish (or for real NFL players sporking Campbell's Chunky Fully Loaded out of the Black Cans). Note: As other reviewers have noted, not even polycarbonate lasts forever; mine broke in half after about a year of daily use. Those willing to pay a little extra for an indestructible spork can choose a Light My Fire Titanium Spork.

Campout Wonder,

My son's Boy Scout troop requires that each camper bring their own knife-fork-spoon, plate and cup. No disposables allowed. The "Light My Fire" brand Spork is strong, easy-to-clean and durable. I highly recommend this product!

Good while it lasted,

The ergonomics of this product are great. However, the spoon snapped off of the body after just two weeks of lunch-time use.

Functional Design, Flimsy,
This review is from: Light My Fire Spork (Misc.)
This spork is inexpensive, lightweight, has the added benefit of a small knife on the side, and comes in an array of funky colors. It's basically comfortable to use, and it's "quiet" if you're eating from a stainless steel or titanium dish.
A couple reviewers mentioned hurting their mouth on the serrated knife. Perhaps I have a big mouth :), but for some reason this has never happened to me. I do, however, find the utensil flimsy. It takes very little pressure to significantly bend the shaft, and though I haven't yet broken a tine, I get the feeling that I will... soon... and it's still pretty new. I like this for my lunch sack at work and I bought a second one to keep in my vehicle's glove compartment. For camping, I prefer a heavier, but far more durable, stainless steel spork. 4/11/09 Well, it happened. While eating ice cream tonight, my spork snapped in two, right in the middle. Won't waste my money on another one of these. If you choose this type, be sure to treat it gently.

useless knife, and they WILL snap in half!,

This review is from: Light My Fire Spork (Misc.)
I have had a terrible experience with these utensils. I bought a 4 pack, and every single one of them snapped in half under normal/easy use. I purchased them for a 3 month bicycle tour, and everybody I met who had also purchased these broke them as well. Also, the knife portion is pathetically unusable and only aggravates the mouth. I replaced these with a Lexan spork made by GSI, and it's been great with no issues. Avoid these at all costs!

it's a three dollar "spork"... and not necessary,

i bought it clearance and used it backpacking for two weeks and really, all i needed was a spoon. the fork/fake knife combo might've been helpful if a) i had ever needed it and b) it didn't get in the way while trying to eat using the spoon side. it's nice that it's light, but i wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a good utensil. there's no need for another fancy marketable product, just use what you already have. there's a reason it works.

Broke after 3 days,
This review is from: Light My Fire Spork (Misc.)
Not going to write an essay here.. this is lightweight and well designed, except for the material. Snapped with minimal pressure on day 3 of a 6 day hiking trip. Okay, so I now had a separate fork and spoon with very short handles.. I could still use them to some extent. Except the shorter handles snapped yet again on day 4, making it basically useless.Getting the titanium version, since I like the general idea.

Not a Spork, something better,
This review is from: Spork (Misc.)
I have used this "spork" for about a year. I will start off with the cons and then move on to the awesome.Cons: - The knife part is useless. Its like trying to cut a cooked carrot with a raw carrot. - After about a year it snapped in half. It was however after almost daily use. - to use spoon then fork or vise versa you hand will get messy(to be expected) Pros: - Full spoon part and a full fork - Poly-carbonate construction - Decent sized spoon cup - will not melt After a year of use the fork snapped. I literally used this everyday i worked to eat lunch, and on weekend when out. I picked up another one. It is better then using plastic utensils. |
