Works well. Bought it to throw in my winter emergency kit in my car. You can never have too many ways to start a fire. Word of advice: this makes plenty of spark, but only starts a fire with the help of very good tinder. If you don't want to spend a fortune on exotic fungus or wood shaving tinders, go out and buy a roll of waxed paper, tear it in strips and wad them in your hand. Then loosen them up and you have some excellent tinder.

I bought this fire striker (Sweedish Firesteel - Barbeque Model) to start fires while camping, for an outside firepit, and for backup when treking. I also sent one to my son for similar uses. We both love the striker! Would suggest the smaller model if you are going to carry as this one is 6.5 inches overall.

Over the years I've played around with all kinds of emergency firestarters, from so-called "waterproof" matches to magnesium blocks to bows and drills to flint and steel to butane lighters. This is the first product I've found that works every time in all conditions. Believe it or not, it's actually more reliable when wet than a butane lighter! I bought the Army and Scout firesteels and got the BBQ model really only to practice with. Well, these Swedish firesteels are so easy to use that there's really not terribly much need to practice after the first couple times.
Like any firestarting device from matches to flint and steel, the key is in having dry tinder and starting out with very small bits of wood shavings. For tinder, I really like a golf ball sized bit of dryer lint. Dryer lint ignites so easily that it's worthwhile to regularly harvest it and keep it in zip-lock bags for when you need it. If that's not an option, then dry cedar works well, too. Typically, to get the grill, the chimnea, or the campfire going, what I do is take a tuft of dryer lint, whittle some nice dry oak or cedar on top of it, and ignite it with the firesteel. Only once it's going do I start adding finger sized twigs or kindling. So far, it's worked everytime and I rarely have to scrape the firesteel more than twice. Just to see what would happen, I even soaked the firesteel in water. As long as the tinder was good and dry, it lit anyway, though it took a few more strokes. I think everybody ought to have several sizes of these distributed in their houses, cars, cabins, boats, bug-out bags, hunting kits, etc. This thing is actually easier to use and more reliable than cheap Chinese wooden kitchen matches and unlike a butane lighter it won't leak out over time or pose a safety risk. I plan on getting several in different sizes so I'll always have one handy. Makes a great gift, too.

I selected the Swedish Barbecue Firesteel because I was unimpressed with all the smaller puny ones available on the markets. This one is really thick and hefty, easy to hold on to and to strike! I used it exclusively to light my two burner and a single burner propane camp stoves, each with one stroke of the steel! It worked perfectly. My daughters and 13 year old grandson quickly mastered it too. I also tried it with dryer lint and cedar shavings to light our campfire. Again it worked great! Much better than relying on soggy matches and an iffy lighter, and it is easy enough to carry around in a pocket! I quickly ordered another one for a daughter. I actually ordered two more but the seller would not accept my order for more than one---that was the only minus, because I wanted to avoid two shipping charges! Otherwise it is a very good value for the price!

Startled myself the first time I struck this! It made a huge shower of sparks and made me have to check the living room carpet for any lingering sparks! No worries about getting the BBQ, propane stove, campfire, etc. started with this one! Quality design and excellent fit in my hand. Easy to use.

This thing is amazing. You won't believe how great it is until you actually use it. It's so easy to start a fire. I will be ordering another one of these to keep by my grill. No more fumbling for matches or a lighter. This will easily get the job done and can be used 12,000 times. The packaging states that it can be sparked up to 12,000 times.

I have a couple of these and bought the BBQ model to light my Weber's charcoal chimney.
After several uses, I picked it up to light off a slow cook for a nicely dry rubbed Boston Butt, but discovered the small plastic plug had fallen off the cord and the steel striker was missing! (I eventually found the striker.) I don't understand why the manufacturer doesn't simply knot the end of the cord instead of using a piece of molded plastic that, in my case, can fall off and render the product unusable? I replaced the cord with a longer section of leather thong and a decorative knot - a much better match for this model's wood handle. Anyway this product works fine. Since I don't suffer OCD I'm not going to keep track of how many strikes I'll get out of it - but guess this will last for many years. It has already helped make some fine BBQ! |
