I checked this book out of the library due to my interest in the film Gone With the Wind, in which of course Vivien Leigh portrays the main protagonist of Scarlett O'Hara. While the chapter devoted to her Gone With the Wind days is somewhat short considering that is really what Vivien Leigh is immortalized for, I found her whole story to be very interesting and I couldn't put the book down. The author focuses on the career of Vivien Leigh. She had an interest in acting early on but more or less happened upon it by sheer good fortune when her friends suggested she pose for a cigarette ad. Since she had a fondness for books, she did so to earn more book money. And voila, one thing led to another. Blessed with sheer beauty, Vivien Leigh rarely had things not go her way in life. But the book focuses heavily on her marriage to Lawrence Olivier, apparently the god of Vivien's idolatry, and its eventual termination in divorce. There are several interesting details which are revealed in the book, for one I had never noticed before that Vivien had a swan's neck. Something which was considered a hindrance when she first entered the world of acting. So the book is worthwhile and informative. For fans of Gone With the Wind, don't expect too much of it to be mentioned in this book. It was early on in her career and the author focuses on her entire life span. Which was tragically cut short due to her heartbreak and tuberculosis.
