5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product
These things are great. I have an unfinished basement with exposed light bulb fixtures, and a 5 1/2 foot ceiling down there. After breaking two light bulbs with my head, I ordered these. Easy to install, easy to change light bulbs after installation, these things are well worth the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not deep enough
This cage is quite sturdy but if fitted in the way shown, under the lamp holder, it's not really long enough for CFL bulbs in a porcelain fitting even when using the new 60W super minis. They would still be protected but protrude lower than the bottom edge of the cage. The bulb shown in the illustration must be a 40W CFL with a low profile plastic fitting.

As the product description says this product comes in two halves which are fitted around the bulb by clamping them between the light box and the bulb holder. Fitting is easy (given you have sufficient clearance around the bulb holder to easily slide in the two halves of the cage) in that you simply loosen the screws that secure the bulb holder to the light box until the gap is sufficiently large, slide the two halves of the safety cage in between, snap the two halves of the safety cage together around the bulb and then re-tighten the screws. The light box provides a secure mounting for the cage and the cage itself is sufficiently robust that it does not flex at all. The two halves clip together securely with small pins and hole locators plus tabs which snap together. There is plenty of room for CFL and oversized bulbs. The cage is made of white plastic which is a good match to the finish on most ceramic bulb holders. I have uploaded some pictures which show how the finish assembly looks. Overall a nice product, not cheap but well executed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Serviceable, May 20, 2011

These are perfect solutions to install in garages and other tight spaces where you are liable to knock out a lamp. There are plastic and somewhat light duty, but for most residential applications, just fine. They are easy to install, though i had to struggle a bit to get the pins lined up. They have an open space at the bottom that allows for easy lamp replacement. True, if you have very bad luck you might hit a broomstick through that spot, but it is a good trade off for quick bulb switches. Won't rust, obviously and is plenty strong enough for most things encountered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Safety Cage that works..., July 30, 2011

This is a neat product that requires about 5 minutes of installation time, including setting up a ladder. Very clever design and idiot proof. Once installed the bulb can be easily removed without removing the cage. My only concern is that I used these on 100w (equivalent) CFL's and about 1/4" of the bulb is exposed below the cage. A slicing action (loading a table on an overhead shelf) near the bottom of the cage might rupture the bulb. I think a direct hit to the cage would not cause the CFL to break. It's a good design and very easy installation. I'd recommend to friends/family.

This cage does its job...protects a light bulb. We are using it in the basement where the kids play ball. This cage has saved us from broken glass.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job, January 3, 2011

This works as advertised, simply unscrew the fixture a bit, slide the two halves together with the base between the fixture and the wall (or ceiling), then re-tighten the screws. A long screwdriver would be optimal, but an average length one worked for me. My only complaint is that I wish it were a little longer. I used a 'regular' bulb, not a compact florescent, and the edge of the bulb is even (or sticks out a hair) with the end of the cage. However, I still think it will be extremely difficult for someone to touch the bulb without hitting the cage first.

I purchased this product after getting tired of having our kids break basement lights when playing indoor lacrosse. It works like a charm. They are easy to install (no need to turn off the power) AND allow for easy light bulb changing afterwards. Quit barking at the kids and buy this product!

Product performs great. Use it in my crawl space. Make sure to have at minimum an 8" screwdriver to properly tighten the screws.
