5.0 out of 5 stars Hands Down...The Character Rigging Book, September 13, 2005

Until I read this book Rigging was always a challenge and something I avoided. This book clearly explains not only the buttons to click but the basic concepts needed for anyone that wants to rig. Then when you have mastered the basics he walks you thru complex, power, but easy to setup rigging setups.

As an Instructor I recommend this book not only to my students but also to high end studios. Jonny has written the "Rigging Bible" in my honest opinion.

I hope we see more from this talented artist!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great basic experience, July 4, 2011

This review is from: LightWave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation, Volume 2: Rigging & Animation (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
I have volumes one and two of Lightwave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation. Although it's a bit out-of-date (Lightwave is currently in version 10), it provides great knowledge of the basics of character creation. Rigging (well) is the key to good character animation, and often a hassle.
With this book you'll learn more about the logics of how the program works; and it's great for newbies and experts - I don't consider myself an expert but I've been working with animation for over 10 years; and this book has provided me with techiques I hadn't developed properly and are really useful and time-saving.
Also, the book is very well written so it flows lightly - you learn and get entertained.

I'm currently using LW 9.6 and this book is great. Jonny does a great job explaining the techniques and guiding you through the animation process. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best one yet, April 25, 2011

I have both books now...the modeling and texturing, and Rigging and Animation book by Jonny Gordan. Although it is hard to follow on some tutorials, I have learned new things I had not before in other books. It gives good examples, What is important is that he tells you what the tutorial will do, then he gives a step by step on how to do it, some other books will not do this. One thing you must remember is to follow the book to a T or you will miss some important points on what the book author is saying, but these are two good books. One other thing, I just wished he had used a cartoon person instead of a Pig to use as a tutorial, but there are some good examples on how do do teeth, socks, fingers, etc., etc...good book

4.0 out of 5 stars Great detail for learning, February 1, 2011

This review is from: LightWave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation, Volume 2: Rigging & Animation (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
This is the second book of the series and as the first book was well written with many tips and shortcuts, the author continues to demonstrate his knowledge in this book. There are many samples included so even Intermediate artists can simply skip to the section they need, load up the file for the chapter and work through the book to complete the lesson. Just like the first book in the series if your using LightWave 9.6, some of the shortcuts the author uses will need to be remapped for your own installation if you plan to precisely follow each step.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I've read on the subject of Rigging and animating characters in LIGHTWAVE 3D!, July 1, 2009

LightWave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation, Volume 2: Rigging & Animation (Wordware Game and Graphics Library)

I've been a Lightwave user since 1996. I have purchased a lot of support materials in my quest to stay ahead of the curve. Jonny Gordon has written one of the best books I've read on the subject of rigging characters and animation. Something that has been lacking for Lightwave users for a long time. It get's straight to the point and would be a great asset to a majority of Lightwave users beginner to expert. I also recommend that you purchase volume 1 of Jonny's series for a more complete reference to Lightwave 3D's powerful character creation and animation tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Lightwave Resource on Rigging, Bar None, April 13, 2008

This review is from: LightWave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation, Volume 2: Rigging & Animation (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
This is far and away the best book available on Lightwave rigging. Gorden is the only author to thoroughly address the relationship between weight maps, bones and the polygonal structure of the model and how they must be combined to create a working 3D character. I consider this book absolutely essential for anyone looking to do any kind of character animation in Lightwave.

5.0 out of 5 stars You have got to get this book..., November 1, 2007
This review is from: LightWave 3D 8 Cartoon Character Creation, Volume 2: Rigging & Animation (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
I'm a Lightwave user for about 3 years now, I did a lot of 3D stuff but never any boned character animation. Just had trouble getting trough the process of rigging ( like every other beginning 3D artist ).

I bought the Volume 1 and 2 en really took the time of reading it word by word. Underlining the most important things so i'll be able to use these books as a quick reference guide. Sometimes I just forget things and then I like to quickly return to my books for help ;-)

I know that a lot of you prefer some training DVD's above reading because it takes some time to get trough these books... But believe me, they are worth it. They get you trough the basics and then take you up to the next level. The CD that comes with this book also helps a great deal. You can go and analyse the settings of the examples.

I recommend this book to anyone who's thinking about character animation, even if you haven't got any knowledge of rigging. You have got to get this book...
