5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent LW lighting reference!
When I first received this book, I was surprised at the size. First off, [the price of the book seems high because] the book seems a bit thin although it weighs in at about 450 pages. The book is also narrower than most.

However, this book is packed full of information on lighting, including some tutorials. Believe it or not, this is actually light Lightwave...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Information, But . . .
This book offers a lot of useful information. However, it is horrifically overpriced, especially considering its size (don't let the number of pages fool you, it's the size of a trade paperback novel), and the fact that it has very few color pictures. Also, at least a third of the book is redundant.

When I first received this book, I was surprised at the size. First off, [the price of the book seems high because] the book seems a bit thin although it weighs in at about 450 pages. The book is also narrower than most.

However, this book is packed full of information on lighting, including some tutorials. Believe it or not, this is actually light Lightwave reading. The author's writing style presents complex concepts in an easy to understand fashion. The book also covers a lot of nuances in Lightwave lighting, and even includes a chapter full of tutorials and another chapter that looks at third party lighting plug-ins, including Worley's G2 and Eki's Plug-Pak (both LW must-haves). The book is hard to put down once you get started reading. ...

Hopefully we will continue to see more titles like this from WordWare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full course on lighting, in a book..., January 28, 2004

This review is from: LightWave 3D 7.5 Lighting (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
This book is packed with information. In a clear, concise and entertaining manner Nick untangles the mystery of the art of lighting. I love the balance of the theoretical with the practical. You not only learn how to light a scene better, but you learn why you do it that way, and that, in the long run, is what is needed. I think that this book is not only a great resource for the Lightwave enthusiast, but would be a great benefit for any 3d user.

I have to agree with everyone on here that gave Nicholas Boughen's book a 5 star.Even though the book is smaller than most but it is packed with so much information on lighting.First off this book starts teaching you about different lighting,in the real world, than teaches you the lights in Lightwave then you actually get to do Tutorials that teach you the use of the lights.
I'd have to say that this book is a must for any amatuer or even advanced user of Lightwave to take a look at.I think alot of beginners or even advanced users will get alot of helpful information from this "must have" book.I know that It has taught me alot about "real world" lighting and the lighting used in Lightwave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the price! Heavy in content, easy to take in, July 14, 2003

This review is from: LightWave 3D 7.5 Lighting (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
Having used Lightwave for a few years, its nice to get a book that still teaches you tons and helps make you that much better as an artist. Understanding how light works in the real world is something that is absolutely essential for lighting in 3D. The author explains how to approach lighting with that in mind. All the essential tools are covered in great detail, offering techniques and tips to get the look you want. While the book is heavily geared towards the lightwave artist, non-lightwavers would still find lots of useful information.

Nicholas writes from the perspective of someone who's been in the industry for a long time. Its very well written, and a joy to read. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best lighting reference available for LighWave, May 29, 2003

This review is from: LightWave 3D 7.5 Lighting (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
I am nearly finished reading this book. It is easily the most informed source on lighting for LightWave that you can buy. I found the concepts easy to understand and the text easy to read. The author does a great job explaining many unknown or misunderstood concepts.

Some people say the book is small, but it's not. It's over 450 pages and every page is packed full of information. It's about an inch and a half narrower than some of the other Wordware books, but it also does not have an extra inch and a half empty space in the margins, so the amount of text and pictures on each page is about the same as any other book. It's an unusual shape, which is kind of strange, but that doesn't make it any less valuable or loaded with great tutorials, theory and examples. As a matter of fact, I decided to write this review because I read the review of "A Reader" from Waltham, MA who says the book is as small as a trade paperback. I don't think that reader has the same book I do. This is a full sized text. I own both the LightWave 3D7 Character animation book by Timothy Albee and Modeling a character in 3DS Max. This book easily has far more information per page than the Modeling book, and has as much as the Character Animation book, even though they are both wider books, but they also have much wider empty margins on either side of the page, and the Character book is 100 pages shorter!

The book begins by explaining how light works in the real world. Many real-world examples are given. Then LightWave's lighting tools are covered in exquisite detail. I learned more in this section than I did from the manual. The third section shows you how to take the tools and get the lighting results you want. It's very organized, very well thought out and very, very well written. Easily worth the price (at least with the Amazon discount).

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in creating great lighting.

I have been using Lightwave for about 8 years now and have always had some trouble getting the lighting to look just right. This book explains everything you need to know about lighting within Lightwave. I thought that after 8 years I wouldn't need this book, but the author Nicholas Boughen proved me wrong. If you want your animations to have that professional look you have been wanting, you need to get this book and read it twice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Insites to Lighting in 3D, March 7, 2004
By
This review is from: LightWave 3D 7.5 Lighting (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
I have had the pleasure of reading this book over the past year or so and I find it a great educational tool. Get past the traditional pitfalls you can fall into without knowing the details of what to look for when going for photo-realism. Nick shows you from the basics up to what to look for in real life and how to translate it into a 3D equivalent using 3D lighting tools found in most high-end packages. It's amazing how it can really change the look of your stuff, and no more are you saying to yourself....."how are they getting that great look?". It has quite a bit of repetition but it is great if you use it for reference. Open your eyes to the secrets of 3D lighting techniques especially for Lightwave 3D. I hightly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool book even for mortal people :), January 14, 2007
This review is from: LightWave 3D 7.5 Lighting (Wordware Game and Graphics Library) (Paperback)
I'm not 3D-designer and don't work with 3D-graphics. I mostly work with 2D-graphics and like photography. But as any woman or lady i'm very curious and i like to know how everything works and why.
I just decided to write this book from interest and get pretty much involved in reading.

Many people and even designers don't like to know simple things, like why that works how it works and don't like to penetrate in simple physical events. This book is great - it explains all lighting things works and then tells how to imitate it in LightWave. Very much tips and useful information.

Think this book will be good not only for 3D-designers but also for web-designers and photographers. I'm pretty happy with this book.
