This Magnifier is excellent for use on flat surfaces when reading letters as it is the perfect size for a standard business letters. It is also excellent when reading pocketbook paper novels. It's length is a deterrent when reading standard size hard back books as you have to flatten out the right page of the book lest you get distortation of the words. There is a line at the bottom which is fine when holding it in your right hand on the right side of the page. You then have to flip it upside down to hold with your left hand for the left page due to its length; the bar line will then be used above the line you are reading. Sometimes the words are distorted if the print is very small & single spaced such as in a textbook. This magnifier is better than nothing & might work best while sitting a a table. I have been unable to find a small bar with this degree of magnification.

This is a very useful magnifier. The unit is 9" long overall and the part beyond the handle is about 7.25". It magnifies three to five lines of text depending upon font size and line spacing.It is intended to be held against the document or object being looked at. It works perfectly well if you hold the document in one hand and the magnifier in the other hand. Despite what one reviewer said, the unit has a line built into it as a guide. It helps the user align the magnifier on one line of characters. I find the line a better guide than the broad yellow highlight stripe some units have. To me, the stripe is more visually intrusive. This line also relates to one design deficiency. There is only one line and it is placed such that when you hold the unit in your right hand the line will be below what you read. If you hold the unit in your left hand, the line will be above what you read. It still works there although the manufacturer should have designed in two lines so that it could be held and used equally well in the right and left hand! That is why I gave it four rather than 5 stars. Everything in context, though - I quite like the unit. Very handy.
