This review is about the Original Lightwedge without the Harry Potter Graphics. The operation and construction is identical:

I read books at night, frequently, so I purchased this product so I wouldn't disturb my wife. This light source is simple in design: tiny LED lamps illuminate a thin piece of plastic (working similar to a fiberoptic lamp Lumisource LS-FO SPRAY Fiber Optic Spray). It is about the dimensions of a full sized book and the black handle which houses the battery/light source is somewhat bulky. A small button toggles the light intensity from low to dim to off.

USE

Place the item on the page that you want to read, push the button to the light intensity that you desire (allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, which may take a minute or more), and flip the item to the other page to read. As you turn the page, you will need to take the item out, and place it back into the book.

In concept, this product is ideal. You have a light source that is limited to the pages that you are viewing. However, even on the highest intensity (let's call it dim and dimmer), the light is still somewhat low. What can you read with this item? Books that have high contrast paper (glossy pages are most ideal since the reflective proper of the paper allows for better view). Conventional novels are a bit more difficult to read. Magazines are impossible unless you read on your stomach with the magazine placed on the bed. Furthermore, pictures are difficult to see, at best.

DURABILITY

Like any screen on a laptop, I placed a SCREEN PROTECTOR on my lightwedge to prevent scratches. Any scratch with transmit uneven light (more than usual).

Given that LEDs have very little power requirements, I have had the same batteries in the unit for the past 3 years, and it is still running.

DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS

More LED bulbs along the 'spine' of the handle would improve the light intensity.

A thinner, scratch resistant plastic with a lighter handle would be a marked improvement.

VERDICT

Knowing the limitations and tendency for scratches, it is an innovative product that still has good uses. You will need to try this product for yourself, before you can decide if it works for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars LUMOS!, July 20, 2007

Not just for the Harry Potter fan! (BUT A MUST IF YOU ARE ONE!) The lightwedge book light is by far the best book light I have ever used. It fully illuminates the page making reading easy on the eyes even in the darkest setting. Not at all like the booklights that shine down on a page. I find them very frustrating after a short time as they mostly only shine a circular path over a few square inches of book. Others with a larger circumference seem to bother others not reading the book! This book light's lens lies across the page and gives the reader full light, but doesn't disturb others. While I pour over my latest favorite novel...my husband snores on! I recommend it to ANY avid reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!, December 16, 2007
This review is from: LightWedge Harry Potter LUMOS Book Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought one of these for my sister and one for myself, more as a joke than anything else. I was delighted to discover that this is the best book light I've ever owned! My sister and I are both avid readers, so we really put this light through its paces. The battery life is amazing and the light is evenly distributed across the page. Of course, it also makes a good book mark when you are being forced away from your book!

If you can get your hands on one, do so!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Agree Fantastic Gadget, March 31, 2006
The idea of the Lightwedge itself, a sheet of high grade acrylic that spreads the light from small LCD lights across the entire page of the book is clever enough. It is clear and bright enough to read comfortably by without distracting a bedmate or a seatmate. Add to this a Harry Potter theme with interchangeable snap-on Potter emblems that allow a custom touch, and you have a great gift for that Potter fan in your life.

If that Potter fan is the right age you might even lead to the extinction of trying to read by flash light under the covers.

I happened to find this book light by accident, and what a happy accident it was!

I bought the Harry Potter version (because it was on sale for only $25 vs. the plain one being regular price at $35) and the only difference is that it comes with different buttons for the on/off switch that you can swap out depending on your mood. Otherwise it's exactly like the plain version - same size (sized to read hardcover books).

I also bought the soft case to store it in while not in use. (Very glad I got that!)

Pros:
I no longer bother my husband when I read in bed.
It puts light directly where I need it and I DON'T have to keep adjusting it.
It does NOT get hot.
It doubles as a bookmark.
The batteries last a LONG time!
The optional case protects it from scratches and keeps it clean when you are not using it as a bookmark.

Cons:

It gets dirty (smudged) quickly, even if your hands are clean (and you MUST be careful to use a good cleaner or it will get scratched - I use the spray I clean my eyeglasses with along with a special cloth and it works just fine).

The light may flicker a bit at times (I think because I must joggle the switch while moving it from one side of the book to the other) - just wiggle the "on" switch and it stops.

If you are reading a hardcover book it is the perfect size. If you switch to reading paperback books, it's over-sized and you must compensate by moving it around until you find an angle that is comfortable for you to hold both the light and the book. Otherwise you could buy the paperback size version of this light. (Things could be worse - I guess it's better to buy large and compensate for small vs. buying small and having to constantly move the light around for larger books - just FYI.)

********
I bought this LightWedge from Amazon and am very happy with it.

I then found the company's website (bigger and brighter dot com) and they have all the different versions (size, color, etc.) of LightWedge, all the accessories for the LightWedge, plus other things I had no idea existed to read a book with.

Their prices are very reasonable, their website is easy to use, and their customer service people are very nice to talk to on the phone. They respond quickly to emails, and are extremely accommodating.

I ordered one for my sister-in-law and my mom for Christmas.

All in all I would say this is a great book light experience. Enjoy!

This is fantastic for reading in the car at night without distracting the person driving. When I was at my mom's house over the holidays, this went with me wherever I went.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Construction, July 4, 2008
This review is from: LightWedge Harry Potter LUMOS Book Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
I actually bought 2 of these because I am such a fan of the Lightwedge book lights. However, the first one I bought started malfunctioning after about a month. The light would go off and would only come back on if you adjusted the batteries. There was a problem with the connectors and I had to constantly fiddle with it to get the light to stay on. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought another one a few months later only to discover the same problem with that one. It must be a design flaw with the battery housing. I have never had a problem with the paperback Lightwedge and don't like other book lights, so I was very disappointed that I couldn't use this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you think it's dim, check the battery installation..., October 17, 2009

I've used a paperback-size Light Wedge for years and love it. However, when I first used the Lumos, I found the light to be very dim. Before throwing the thing away, I checked the manufacturer's web site. It said that if one of the batteries is facing the wrong direction, the light will work, but it will be very dim. I thought I had been very careful in loading the batteries, but what do you know, one of them was facing the wrong way. Once that was fixed, the thing lit up much brighter. I almost wish it had two settings like the smaller model so I could dim it. The only negative is the inevitable scratches (which I don't even notice once I'm reading). I don't mind lifting the light up to turn pages. Once you get used to it, it's no problem at all. The even coverage of light on the page is so much better than the clip-on light I had been using for hardcover reading. And the price is a steal.

It seems like a toy, but it's not. This is the most amazing book light I've ever used. (and I've tried lots of them) It fits snugly into the book, paperback or hardcover, and lights up every word. The page gets illuminated, not the whole room. My sleeping husband loves it. And I take it with me when I travel, so that on a plane I get a better overall light. I'm getting them for holiday presents too. Could save many a marriage. That they used these at Hogwarts is a bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lightwedge is the most phenomenal booklight out there!, September 2, 2009
This review is from: LightWedge Harry Potter LUMOS Book Light (Tools & Home Improvement)
This light is such an amazing piece of technology! Anyone who loves late night reading, especially if you have a roommate, will love this book light. I have tried the extending ones that latch onto later pages, and float above the pages; it just wasn't convenient. I found I had to move the light on the same page to see other parts better, and it was a pain to move it when you got to the page the light was on. The book light just rests over the page, and you hold it as part of the book. It's so easy! And it makes reading much more pleasurable. You don't have to get the Harry Potter one, but the light wedge is amazing.
