5.0 out of 5 stars A great book light
I have been using the original Lightwedge for awhile (for Hardcovers) and when the new paperback version came out I was sure to buy it. It is just like the original Lighwedge, just smaller. It has two LEDs as well which I was afraid it would only be one. It definitely lights up the entire page very well. I used to use the Itty Bitty Book Light but didn't like using it...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book light, March 21, 2004

I have been using the original Lightwedge for awhile (for Hardcovers) and when the new paperback version came out I was sure to buy it. It is just like the original Lighwedge, just smaller. It has two LEDs as well which I was afraid it would only be one. It definitely lights up the entire page very well. I used to use the Itty Bitty Book Light but didn't like using it for hardcovers because I felt it did not light the entire page well. For paperbacks it worked well but I like the Lightwedge much more for both paper and hardbacks. Although you should be careful because it is easy to scratch the plastic. I do not find it noticeable when you are reading against the page. If you hold it in the air you can see the scratches but when it is on the page you don't. I don't find it annoying to have to turn the page with as some people may have complained. It also looks real cool using it. If you want to try something new and are looking for a good book light this is definitely one to try.

I bought both the original and the paperback version as gifts for my wife. She was very dissatisfied with both as the light they provide is marred by vertical shadows across the page which she found distracting. Evidently not everyone is bothered by these shadows, based on the positive reviews and the fact that in calling the manufacturer with the problem, I was told that that is how they worked and my only recourse was returning them to the place I bought them.

Since the packages had been opened, Amazon charged a steep re-stocking fee plus shipping and handling charges. I ended up paying about 40% of the price of the items for the total unstatisfactory experience.

I strongly recommend that you buy this item where you can try it first.

2.0 out of 5 stars I WAS DISAPPOINTED....., September 1, 2004

I bought this with joyful anticipation. I got home, placed new batteries in the wedge, lowered the lights, and settled in bed expecting a nice evening reading. The first thing I noticed was that my light wasn't even. The lighting across my page was "wavy"; light and darker bands emanating from each bulb, much like the ripple from dropping a pebble in a pond. They weren't moving, but the alteration in light really made reading difficult. I don't know if this is a "bad" wedge, but other factors are going to keep me from replacing it with another one. The main factor is comfort. If you like to read laying down, you will find it difficult to hold the wedge in place over the page. You will also find it cumbersome to always position it over EVERY page. With a typical book light, you simply attach the light to the front or back of the book and never have to really deal with the light again. With this light, you have to make it part of your reading experience. Sure, it looks cool, but who am I trying to impress? I can't wait for the day they develop a flat, handheld monitor that is appealing and as easy on the eyes as paper. Then my continual search for a quality book light will end.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice concept, bad design, December 10, 2004
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
Being an obsessive bedtime book reader, I can't live without a good book light (or I'd have to live without my husband). After my last one died, I thought I'd give this one a try. It sounds cool and you never have to replace the bulbs. The first mark against it was the horrible wavy lines that it splashed across my pages. Next mark off was the fact that it didn't stay balanced on the top of the page, even with the page topper inserted. I found having to lift it at every page turn something I just couldn't be ok with. The last straw was that after only 3 weeks of use, it started to intermittently flash on and off, depending on how it was being held or moved. Some defect in the way the batteries connect. The battery compartment is curved and therefore makes for and unusual non-flat placement of the batteries. No wonder.Unfixable. Don't waste your time or money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited..., October 9, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
I normally don't write reviews because others do a good job of it. So why should I interfere? I chose to write this review because I think this should be heard by the creator and consumer alike.

The wedge design is unique and attractive. Even so, it is fragile and needs to be protected when transporting it. I think that it should have come with a velvet or similar type protector pouch or bag. I understand that these can be purchased separately but that isn't exactly a luxury optional accessory and therefore shouldn't have to be purchased in that manner.

Some aspects of the lightwedge need improvement or redesign. I know that some people have light sensitive significant others and for that reason want this product because it doesn't have a lot of stray light. The lightwedge has stray light streaming out of the edges of the clear plastic. If your reading the page on the right/left of the book the lightwedge sits on that page you're reading. So you have a 50% chance out of 2 pages that your pointing the light right at him/her. This could be fixed if the creator would just put a strip of light absorbing or reflecting material on the edge or they could just "frost it" to disperse the light a little. My other complaint is a black hole located around the halfway point near the battery and light compartment. This black hole could be corrected by simply installing a 3rd led light in the middle of the unit. This would probably not significantly affect the life of the battery noticeable by the user and would make reading easier for the eyes instead of dilating the iris and making me think that reading in the dark is wrong and this is my punishment. My third complaint has to do with the lighting as well. Why are there ripples in the light? I know some cheap leds produce a ring of focused light with noticeable dark spots but this looks like it was intended by the makers but why? If it is needed for functionality then could they just tune it down a notch or smooth out those ripples so it doesn't look like I'm reading through a pane of machined glass?

I gave 3 out of 5 stars because of the defects and lack of the, what I feel was necessary, travel bag. I would consider buying this again in the future if it was upgraded with my and other improvements applied.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Reader, April 2, 2005

I bought this reading light a few months ago. I was a little skeptical initially about how well it would work. I have gone through more Itty Bitty lights than I care to admit to (they are poorly designed junk). After some initial time to get used to using this light, I am generally pleased. Its been the only light that hasn't disturbed my wife's sleep when I use it. I just recently ordered the full size version for hardcover and larger softcover books. I have left the protective plastic sheet over the lucite lense and have not experienced any scratching problems. The batteries do last a while and the light will gradually dim, telling you its time for new batteries. This light is worth trying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unwieldy, July 12, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased the paperback-book sized model. Upon opening the product, noticed the surface was already marred with splotches that do not come out. Also, as previous reviews state, the LightWedge scratches very easily. As for the light switch, the middle one does not work. For reading in bed, although the light is soothing, it is very uncomfortable to turn the page and readjust holding the device.

I was really hyped up when I learned of this product (on Oprah) and was going to buy both sizes at once. I am glad I did not. It's a good try, but not quite the perfect book light I was hoping for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to seriously consider, March 2, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a pretty good product, but buying the paperback size and using it for larger books can be a bit annoying. Other bothersome things:

* The LEDs produce an interference pattern on the page if the light rests on the book directly. This is avoided by letting it sit just above the page.

* The plexiglass scratches very easily. The lens care kit and the soft case are necessities.

* The light is a little dim, but it is softer on the eyes than other book lights.

* Turning pages becomes a bit of an exercise, but you get used to it somewhat quickly.

Overall, its a good light that I would recommend - with accessories. The fact that you only need to change batteries and not lights is an added bonus.

1.0 out of 5 stars Took it back immediately, September 11, 2007
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
I found this at the local bookstore, and after seeing reviews, I was very optimistic. But after getting it home and turning it on, I was very disappointed. It was unusable! I tried on different books, and it was consistently poor in terms of lighting, and I could see the text from the previous page.

A good idea, in theory, but it doesn't work.

1.0 out of 5 stars strains my eyes, October 6, 2006
This review is from: LightWedge Paperback LED Booklight (Tools & Home Improvement)
My eyes hurt after reading only a few pages. I have good eyes (perfect vision) but this light really hurts my eyes. Also, the size of this booklight is important and has to match the size of your book. Many of the paperback books are made in a slightly larger size than the LightWedge Paperback Booklight which leaves parts of your page unlit.
