5.0 out of 5 stars New Light, February 28, 2004

This review is from: Lighted Clearings for the Soul: Reclaiming the Joy of Living (Paperback)
Dr. William Yoder, in Lighted Clearings for the Soul, took on an awesome task in offering his insights on the subject of moving out of ways of thinking that bind us and limit our joy, into the place he calls "lighted clearings." There is an abundance of writings on this subject, from the Christian New Testament to A Course in Miracles and uncountable tomes in between, which discuss and teach this concept of finding and living joy and celebration amidst messages that bombard us that life is dangerous, painful and a struggle. Yoder is to be commended for even taking on this challenging writing task, but that he has successfully and effectively presented NEW thought is remarkable.

One example that Yoder uses to illustrate what he means by "lighted clearings" is how he and his wife discovered, when they were building their new home, that different light bulbs which emphasized different bands of the light spectrum could make a photograph of a room look entirely different. After seeing the various effects the different light treatments could create, they found themselves asking, "what does this picture really look like?" Yoder says this experience helped him to understand better the variations in how we view "reality."

Other people, like myself, who have gotten lost in a lot of the New Age rhetoric about "creating our own reality" may find Yoder's principles not only expansive, but refreshing. I have found much of what's been written in other books difficult to implement in my own life because it didn't quite make sense to me or was unconvincing. Yoder seems to have drawn on his strengths as a former teacher of philosophy in universities and most recently his practice as a chiropractor and workshop leader to organize this book in such a way that addresses my need to understand logically, but also holistically. Step by step he leads the reader through not only a useful examination of why we might want to change the framework within which we live our lives, but also how to accomplish it.

This is not a breezy book to polish off in an evening. It has enormous depth, analysis and insight. Yoder gives new language to very old ideas and "sheds light" on just how much control we do have over how we experience our "reality."

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the average self-help book, March 10, 2004
This review is from: Lighted Clearings for the Soul: Reclaiming the Joy of Living (Paperback)

My problem with most self-help books is the old adage, "If you're so smart, way aren't you rich?" I've read several of them, from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, to The Power of Positive Thinking, by Norman Vincent Peale, to name two of the trend setters. Then, there is Self Rescue, by John Cantwell Kiley, Phd, MD. It is a remarkable volume, chosen by Psychology Today as its book of the month. And of course, there are all of the imitators.

This one is, perhaps, different than you might expect. Written by a philosopher who is also, almost incidentally, a chiropractor.

It is well-written, easy to read and apply, and will, very possibly, help you to enrich your life--although, in the final analysis, you pretty much get out of life what you put into it, in my experience.

Nevertheless, I recommend this book to you, if you are looking for a plan to help yourself, as well of course, as Dr. Kiley's, Naploeon Hill's, and Dr. Norman Peale's. They all have things to offer, and it's better, I think, to look them all over. But this is one of the good ones. You won't go wrong buying it.
