About the Author

Marie Beach has been a certified hypnotherapist since 1994. Her previous careers included over 20 years as an award-winning newspaper, screen and magazine writer writing about matters of the mind. A graduate of Fordham University in New York, she attended Boston University's School of Journalism and worked in public relations, marketing and sales and as a teacher of creative writing. Previous published work was several editions of a book on Richmond and Virginia.

She is a certified instructor and member of The National Guild of Hypnotherapists, one of the largest and oldest organizations of its kind in the world. Certified in Complementary Medical Hypnotism, Marie has been both a facilitator and lecturer on the international bestseller, "A Course in Miracles" as well as serving as Chairman of a Virginia community services board providing mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse services and as a lecturer at the Medical College of Virginia on hypnosis.

Marie's approach in her practice follows the principle that true healing requires a letting go of guilt which is often lying in the subconscious part of the mind, and allowing forgiveness to take its place. That forgiveness must be extended to self as well as to others.

FOREWARD:

This Ten-week Weight program is unique because it does not focus on food but the emotions that drive you to eat food inappropriately. Emotions are what send you looking in the refrigerator for something that isn't there and never will be. Overeating is the symptom, not the cause of being overweight, unless, of course, there is an existing physical condition. And we urge you before starting any program to "Lighten Up!" to see a doctor to rule out all physical causes. We also recommend seeing an allergist because food allergy and food sensitivities can also contribute to weight gain.

Your "Lighten Up! Lose Weight!" program is an intense examination of your emotions, including unforgiveness. Yes, not forgiving someone -- or yourself - can create emotional and physical havoc beyond your wildest imagination. Such is the stuff that makes up your blocks and issues that motivates compulsive behavior toward food.

"Lighten Up!" utilizes the power of your mind -- your subconscious mind -- through self-hypnotism. In this mind - some-times called a trance state - (surprisingly similar to when you are driving and on being automatic pilot) you gain insight into what unmet needs and emotions are being satisfied by food. Like antidedepressants, an excessive intake of food can take the edge off what's bothering you, but like most temporary fixes can make it more difficult to get down to the root cause. In a program of self-hypnotism (or hypnosis, as it is more commonly referred), your subconscious is re- programmed or retrofitted with much more uplifting, self-affirming suggestions, changing negative to positive. The effectiveness of hypnosis in weight loss has been demonstrated in three recent studies: first, in a control study conducted by University of Connecticut scientists, it was found that test subjects lost 60% more weight using hypnosis than those using other strategies. Then there was a NBC Dateline TV broadcast in April of 2003 reporting hypnosis as the second most successful of six weight loss programs tested, which included Atkins Diet, extreme exercise, Slim Fast and Weight Watchers. The news magazine followed six people preparing for their 25th high school reunion for four months. Hypnosis came in second. The man who utilized hypnosis lost 40 pounds compared to the first place winner, who lost 50 pounds on the Atkins Diet. All this proves to me is the necessity for us to cut down on our sugar and simple carbohydrates intake rather than a case for giving in to eating all that meat and fat the Atkins requires. Again one has to think longer term. Furthermore, I consider such extreme weight loss, in either case, over a period of four months to be extremely unhealthy. The third study demonstrating the effectiveness of hypnosis in weight loss was a study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, that showed it effective even in small doses; subjects who used hypnosis techniques just once lost nearly twice as much weight as a control group.

But claims alone will not convince you of the effectiveness of hypnosis and self-hypnosis until you experience it for yourself. What first changes is realizing that food has only the power you give it. You give it the power to do for you what it can't: to make you happy and feel pleasure. But what hypnosis' greatest power is that it gives you the clarity to make better choices. This is true power.

What is exciting about the Lighten Up! Ten Week Self- Hypnosis program is its minimal cost as compared to other weight management programs. Also, it utilizes what you will always have going for you - that wonderfully exquisite mind - the subconscious. For a woman this might occur during her pre-menstrual cycle. It is a time when uncontrollable cravings can almost possess you.

There are several possibilities why including the presence of parasites, but that's far outside the goal of this book. Another possibility is food sensitivities become heightened during PMS. Another is that eating meat suffused with antibiotics and hormones may engulf a woman's own hormonal system to create a rush so overwhelming one wants to eat everything in sight. Or, it may be that during PMS, the body is requiring more nutrition than it is getting, particularly protein.

Each weekly segment features a different topic discussing the emotional causes of obesity that have stood in the way of your quest to maintain a slimmer self. These topics are to be read, re-read, and even discussed with loved ones for feedback, particularly the parts that you feel don't apply to you. The feedback of loved ones is important because often they know us better than those for whom we put on a smiley face.

Meditate, ponder, and retreat into the quiet to process the reading material and see what it has to say to you. The first time you may read and outright reject these concepts as making more out of weight problems than is there. Or the root causes and concepts may be/feel familiar if you've done other areas of inner work, but you hadn't applied them to weight. Become aware that if there is a dysfunction on one level - be it mind, body or spirit - it will impact the other two. This is the secret of you - the total revelation of who and what you are. You are a Oneness revealing itself as a triad.

Some good thoughts and ideas. But sometimes you have to decode what the author is trying to say because the editing and writing is so poor. The book seems more like a rough draft before corrections were made. It is full of dropped words, typos and sentences that seem to have been randomly cut and pasted together. Here's one example - the well-known scripture from Ecclesiastes is quoted as "a time to read and a time to sew", when the words are actually "a time to reap and a time to sow" - obviously totally different meanings. While such errors add some humor, they also distort or obscure what the author is trying to say, as well as show a lack of attention to quality.

The ideas for self-hypnosis are very basic - and mostly focused on affirmations. Some of the suggestions the author tells you to make to your subconscious mind could produce negative results, such as that sugar is a poison to your body. There are many types of sugars in many kinds of foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy carbohydrates. You definitely don't want to teach your body to react to sugars as a poison.

As a psychotherapist and healing facilitator, trained in various forms of clinical hypnosis I had hoped this would be a good book to recommend to my clients, but I cannot recommend it to anyone. I gave it two stars because some of the content is useful, and the author is well-intentioned. However readers should be cautious in the use of some of the suggestions/affirmations recommended. In general, any suggestion or affirmation that has negative wording or possible negative consequences should discarded.

I just had the pleasure of attending one of Ms. Beach's workshops in Virginia Beach at the Heritage Store (one of my favorite places!), and I have it say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I left with a clearer understanding of why I have issues with food, a real desire and excitement in making changes, and positivity in myself that I had not had before. Ms. Beach states that "self talk is hynosis" and it sounds so simple but think about it - if we constantly cut ourselves down consciously, then our subconscious has no choice but to listen! The book is a gem, short and to the point, in a laid-back tone that will appeal to readers, as if a friend is talking to you. I also purchased her cd and plan to start my program immediately. Ms. Beach is very personable and seemed to truly care about her workshop members, asking questions and acknowledging feelings, in a very warm environment that made you want to share. I only wish the workshop could have been longer! Please check out her website as well (http://www.en-trance.com). A wonderful experience all the way through, highly recommended!

With all the hype surrounding Dr. Phil's "ultimate" solution, this gem of a book provides the missing ingredient. I loved the step-by-step approach and guidance in how to rally put the power of my mind to work for me. Not just talk, this book gave me the exercises and scripts I needed to take even Dr. Phil's good ideas and do the actual programming he talks so much about, but doesn't really give the hands-on tools to pull off. Thank You, Ms. Beach.
