This is the story of the man who built and kept the St. Simon's Light and of his love for a wealthy young lady. James Gould is sort of an everyday Joe who ends up carving a lasting life in coastal Georgia. Gould's story is intertwined not only with St Simons and Georgia but with the post revolutionary United States. The scene in the book in which the lighting of the lighthouse is celebrated is one that I still remember, and it's been years. Price's older works are better and this is one of them.

What a wonderful book ! Not only you learn the history and feelings of the times when slaves were around and how things were, but you can understand and feeling the feelings of the characters ! This is a novel for ages 13 and up !

Eugena Price is a wonderful author.... she grips you in the beginning and never turns you loose. It is a wonderful historic novel with all the elements of a good read

Most have no clue that besides the James Gould of this book there were many others who migrated to the South from the North, became "Southerners" and fought against their Northern family in the Civil War. And that includes e.g. Mayflower descendants.

This story is interesting history in novel form relating one such story and with good detail about many North and South events of the time.

I would have liked a little more of even earlier history as the local ceramic cooking balls discovered nearby, surely appear Egyptian (see Barry Fell's "America BC").

With today's incessant squabbling in Washington, we have forgotten our roots of being nation builders in the past

Visitors to the museum at the St. Simons Island Lighthouse will find a room dedicated to the life and works of Eugenia Price. Guides tell guests of the many visitors who come to the Golden Isles each year to view the locations described by Ms. Price in her books and loved by her as a resident of St. Simons. Those who have traveled to the island for other reasons leave the lighthouse filled with curiosity about the early inhabitants of St. Simons and the legacy they left - and they are ready to explore that world through the St. Simons Trilogy.

I had been aware of Eugenia Price's books for years, but never considered reading one of her novels. I blame this on her publishers - most of her books are packaged as romance novels, covers festooned with elegant, feminine lettering, and pictures of embracing couples in period dress. This alone has probably lost Ms. Price many male readers who might otherwise have enjoyed the stories of some exemplary, courageous men and the times they lived in. She doesn't deny romantic experiences to her characters, but she also does not gloss over the harsh conditions of the times they lived in - which is essential to experiencing history through a novel.

"Lighthouse" presents the story of James Gould, the builder and first keeper of the original St. Simons light. He is little more than a footnote to the wider history of this nation - you won't even find more than a few sentences about him on Wikipedia. But American history is filled with lives like his - visionary men who moved to the frontier, served their country, and raised up families who would go on to build this nation.

Ms. Price's love of the island shows through - one can almost hear the sound of the ocean waves, or picture the colossal live oaks draped with Spanish moss. Known in her time as an "inspirational" writer, she introduces aspects of her faith in the story, yet does not foist on her characters beliefs which they may not have shared or practiced. The modern reader still may be put off by the old-fashioned dialogue, or the too-permissive perspective on slavery. But overall, this is a solid work of historical fiction, and a good start to a series I look forward to continuing.

this book and its writer were recomended by a librarian a number of years ago and
I liked it so much that a read every thing Eugenia Price wrote.and then I started buying them and reading them again.I shared them with my Mother and my husband even read a few of them,Then while traveling we found ourselves on St Simons Island.
We took a side trip for the day and explored all the places we could find that she had written about,encluding the Lighthouse,the Church and the cemetery and located some of the graves..She was still alive at the time and living there..We made several moves and I lost my collection of her books and in searching for a book last year my grandson showed me how to use the computer to find her books again.I am a native Floridian and found myself spellbound by her books I plan to follow her trail as she travels through Florida and Georgia in the rest of her books as I read them all again.

Book was given to my friend as a gift. She has been hunting for these books at yard sales. I looked up Amazon and gave them as an early Birthday gift.

This book is wonderful. I received it well in time, and have enjoyed it.

In terms of historical fiction of a specific location, this book is both enjoyable reading and objectively grounded in the area being described. I had visited St. Simons and fell in love with its ambiance prior to reading the book. Now planning to complete the trilogy of which this book is the first.
