Katherine worked for over two years to amass this "all you want to know" information on lighthouses and then wrote it in enjoyable and understandable English. Parents & teachers can also learn a lot from this book. It makes a great gift!

Lighthouses for Kids: History, Science, and Lore with 21 Activities (For Kids series)This is an excellent collection of facts, history, 'how-to' science experiments, and examples of what children did to amuse themselves. Lighthouse keeper families lived isolated lives so children worked and entertained themselves with rocks, shells, etc that were near them. Examples of creativity are updated for children of today: seashell picture frame, writing a poem, making a silhouette, and lighting a lantern. The book is best used as a resource for teachers, children that have high interest, and as an historical collection of early lighthouse living. As a teacher, I found it to be one of my best resources.

A great book to bring to the beach with kids!,

This book is terrific!!! There is really something in here for every kid. Lots info for light house lovers, of course. But additionally there are:
- many scientific experiments- my favorite- learn how light is focussed by a light house by creating a reflector with a collander and foil, and using it to melt a marshmallow. There is a lot of science a kid could learn here. -biography/journal entries, personal descriptions, and stories about kids who lived in (or at) lighthouses. Pictures too, of course. -arts and crafts! make a picture frame decorated with sea shells or a paper model of a light house keeper's hat. Between the biographic details and history of lighthouses themselves, kids will learn a fair amount about American history, too. I showed this to my 16 year old son- a lighthouse lover as a little kid. He said "Oh, this is for littler kids" and then forgot to eat his breakfast for 20 minutes while he became engrossed in reading it. It takes a lot to distract a teenage boy from food! I enjoyed reading it too. Bring it on vacation when you go to the beach with kids. You will be glad you did! |
