4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I did enjoy this book, however it wasn't quite what I had expected. I was looking for a studio lighting book and this has both studio and environment lighting. it isn't as extensive in the studio lighting as I would have liked.

3.0 out of 5 stars Umm.. Not exactly much of use if you read other lighting books
I admit - i did "random look inside" thing before buying this. And i got page with flower shot and i liked diagramm and page. But unfortunately there are about 10 more pages like that.

Rest of book is quite typical and going on and on about same old topics. I mean if you new to idea and do not really know what apparent size is, and stuff like that - you will...

This is an intriguing and helpful book on lighting for photography. Utilizing terms that I did not generally associate with photography, the author explains light in simple terms. His careful description of numerous light sources is beneficial to a total understanding of lighting and how it works. A very well presented textbook.

I do know what it is, so i kinda dissapointed at lack of real neat tricks. For new people - I would suggest Light: Science and Magic and Lighting Techniques For Portait Photography over this one any day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and rewarding, August 17, 2008
This review is from: Lighting for Photography: Techniques for Studio and Location Shoots (Paperback)
Everything you wanted to know about light and lighting is covered. Harnessing light to carry the images visualized ties together this nicely written book that is interesting and informative from cover to cover. As I read through I learned a lot about things I have heard of or taken for granted but did not know of in detail. I recommend this book and feel it would be a rewarding experience for anyone.

I have an engineering background, a great interest in the subject matter & I use my camera every day for work. Snooze. Rand shrouds basic concepts in hyperbole. The nearest text I can compare it to is 18th Century philosopher Kierkegaard. If you enjoy such whitty concepts as a "..consideration of the thingness of a thing" Rand's book is for you. If you were hoping to improve your photography results by your own efforts, take a pass.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Techniques, December 15, 2010

I had been struggling with learning the proper lighting techniques for photography when I got this book. I had read a lot of "cookbooks" for lighting, but found that most of them didn't apply to the type of work I was doing. This book really helped clear some of those up. In addition to sharing how he got the looks in many of the book's photographs, he also tells you how to approach common lighting problems. While the book was a little awkward to read in places, and got overly technical in places (while it's generally good to have technical details in a book like this, Rand writes them in a way that can be difficult to trudge through), I do plan to purchase his book about lighting reflective surfaces, as that was the section of the book that was both the most helpful and the best written. Lighting and Photographing Transparent and Translucent Surfaces: A Comprehensive Guide to Photographing Glass, Water, and More

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Drawer Lighting Technology, July 21, 2010

Not a how-to or recipe book, but much more if you are intent on learning lighting. Dr. Rand is an excellent professor and writer. I have not taken any of his courses at Brooks Institute of Photography or at other colleges, but I don't know how he could put the information across more clearly. His information is technical but easy to understand with his diagrams and explainations. The information is not for a particular setup, but applies to all lighting of any setup once you understand the principles. By the time you finish reading this book, and try to duplicate his examples, you will understand how to better apply lighting to inhance and present a subject. The only thing that should be included in a revision would be practical assignments that would demonstrate a principle, but with book in hand and an eye in the view finder, I'm sure you can create your own. A great book from a real authority! Lighting for Photography: Techniques for Studio and Location Shoots Just one last thing...read this book first and then read his other book,"Lighting and Photographing Transparent and Translucent Surfaces". This review is from: Lighting for Photography: Techniques for Studio and Location Shoots (Paperback)
I am big fan of Glenn Rand's book. He is incredibly knowledeable and knows his subject inside and out. Amherst Media is my favorite photography publisher and the two have created yeat another great book!

The content is a little different than other books which makes this a keeper!. My collection of Amherst books just keeps growing and growing.

I highly recommend this book. I have referred to it a few times since first getting it.....not something I can say about ALL my books in my library.

I hope that you enjoy it. :-)
