These musicians have been playing together for a long time. Not only are they good at playing a variety of instruments, but they still like making music. They started out playing for fun and they sound as if they are still having fun. A few of the songs are sad but most are rollicking tunes that will make you happy just to be alive and to be listening. In addition, because they are familiar with the "Late Unpleasnatness," they capture the spirit in which these songs were played and sung.
This will be a CD set you will be glad you bought and will play over and over.

It was just what I was looking for to use in a project I was working on. My wife and I had visited Gettysburg in August 2012 and I was making a movie of all of our pictures to remember the trip by.

I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for music from this era.

Great stuff, I love it. Takes you back to a begone age. Thank you very much. Jim in Bonnie Scotland.

Enjoyed this album immensely. I loved hearing the songs sung as they would have sounded 150 years ago. The Steven Foster songs were sung as they were written before we "sanitized" them to make them politically correct. Listening to the original versions has given me a suspicion that Steven Foster was a closet abolitionist. My favorite cuts were "Cumberland Gap", "Hawks and Eagles", and of course, the final song "Southern Soldier/Dixie". Even my husband, who isn't much of an music lover starts tapping his foot when I play those. I didn't give it 5 stars because I found the commentary of the songs distracting.
