Book Description

SKUNKS AND BATS AND NARCOLEPTIC CATS, OH MY!
As if being struck by lightning wasn’t bad enough. I spent a month in a coma. Of course that was when I was a teenager. It left me with some pretty unusual abilities. For instance, I can find just about anything or anyone. Oh, and I can see ghosts, too!
I pick up extra cash working with the local P.D. I’m their go-to girl when they have someone they need to find. Despite all of this, my life is pretty boring — that is until the very hot Detective Nick Cavanaugh came into my life. Boy did we get off on the wrong foot. I was asked to pair up with Detective Cavanaugh to look for three missing children. Did I mention that he doesn’t believe in my superpowers?
When we discover the children have been kidnapped, the search takes us up into the mountains and old mining towns. With time running out and my abilities going wonky, Cavanaugh is ready to drop me from the case. Pffft! As if that will stop me!
—Andromeda Spencer

Editorial Reviews

Review

Lightning Strikes is a cosy mystery about a woman, Andromeda Spencer, who was struck by lightning when she was younger, which imbued her with psychic powers. Now grown, she helps her parents out at their occult shop and occasionally assists the local police with missing persons cases and kidnappings. When she is tasked with finding three abducted children, her powers open up a mystery much bigger than the police had thought. And she has a love interest in the form of a handsome, arrogant cop, Detective Cavanaugh. The book is well-designed and easy to read on a variety of devices, and the cover is well-designed and stands out as a good one for the genre. Andromeda herself is a spunky, interesting character, whose voice is very original, if occasionally overly breezy. The reader does not get a real sense of her emotional motivations, for example, even though she is attracted to the arrogant Detective Cavanaugh when she first meets him, the reader does not get a sense of what her romantic background as context for the attraction. Overall, however, it is a lively and well-paced book and a very enjoyable read. The cast of secondary characters is suitably wacky and quirky but well-meaning. ~ Judge, 2nd Annual Writer's Digest Self-Published eBook Awards

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful writer with a wonderful book! June 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was really enjoying this story. It was funny and kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down until I got done with it and then I got to the end of the book and the story just ended. I don't know if there is going to be another book to continue the story or what. I was really disappointed. If you are starting a series and going to continue the story instead of wrapping it up into a wonderful story with a wonderful ending then you need to let people know ahead of time.

-Now that I know for sure that there is another book continuing the story, I am changing my stars to 5 stars instead of 4. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 is because at that time we didn't know if there was going to be another book to continue the story or not. This book was wonderfully written and held my attention throughout the whole story. It is hard to believe that this is her first book. She writes like an experienced writer. I look forward to the next book in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable book July 27, 2014

Entertaining story that keeps you engaged. The heroine is a real person with faults not some whiny needy damsel in distress.
There are a few editing issues but I overlooked them in my rating because I enjoyed the book. Particularly liked her quirky family and her narcolepetic cat. Looking forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it August 28, 2014
By Tiffany
Format:Paperback
I'm an English major working through my senior year of college which means I do a lot of really dry reading that is never as enjoyable as I'd like reading to be. This book was a great way to break up the monotony of school work. Just curl up with it and enjoy the reading. It has some fantastic funny moments that make you laugh out loud, probably the loudest a book has ever gotten me to (...you probably shouldn't read this in public unless you want some questioning looks, just FYI). I mean, how can a book with a narcoleptic cat not be completely hilarious? The main character Andromeda is around my age and I find her thoughts, personality, and relationships relatable despite her supernatural abilities and circumstances. Also, being from the San Joaquin Valley myself, it's fun to be familiar with the environment a book is set in for a change instead of leaving everything to imagination. Overall, Lightning Strikes has a really good mix of humor, mystery, and romance that makes for a fun light read.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love narcoleptic cats. September 29, 2014

This author spins a unique tale of a young girl struck by lightning. It is like a mash-up of Kim Harrison's Hollow series and Charlaine Harris' Grave series. The characters are imaginative and well described. There is also a nice blend of humor sprinkled between the pages that lightens the atmosphere of an otherwise ominous situation involving the kidnapping of children. I have to say that I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the second installment. There was one pompous character that annoyed me (Anthony) and I'm wondering if he will return in book two. Neither his presence or pomposity were clearly defined in book one, but I suspect there is more lurking beneath his dark presence that will be revealed, perhaps in book two? This reader hopes so. He'd make a worthy antagonist. Congratulations to the author on a well written story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightning Strikes! September 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Parker has a charming, relaxed writing style that immediately drew me into the story. She has created a feisty fun character in Andromeda (Rommey). Rommey's sassy attitude and descriptions of her unusual family, especially Nanna, made me chuckle several times as I was reading. Indeed it was Rommey's character and family background that made this book such fun.
An interesting plot with good characterisation throughout.
If there is a second book planned, I will be reading it.
A well produced, enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, fun, lite reading March 6, 2015
By MED
Format:Kindle Edition
I have already bought the second book! I enjoyed this book so much. There is humor and a little bit of suspense in the story line. I wouldn't call it a mystery because right away you know what has happened due to Andromeda's clairvoyance. The suspense is in the solving of the crime. I loved the narcoleptic cat falling off everything. The relationship between the detective and Rommy is amusing as well since Rommy, despite her foreknowledge of things, isn't sure what it is.
The book was easy reading and lots of fun. The characters were a bit unreal which made them even more fun and interesting to read about. A bit of the paranormal added to the happenings. Witches, an astrologer, a Goth sister, a clairvoyant, and a good friend who seems real are all entangled in the plot.
I recommend this book, which I received free for an honest review, to anyone who wants a fun escape for a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars Andromeda struck a chord with me.... March 3, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
A quirky little mystery with a good dash of humor. Andromeda was struck by lightning as a teen and it has left her with some unusual talents. Couple that with a mother who's a witch and a dad who does astral readings, a sister who runs a Goth bar, a grandmother in the throes of dementia who thinks she's the pope one minute and a ballroom dancer the next, and a hunky policeman and you have more than enough to spend several entertaining hours. This isn't a thriller or nail-biter, but it is a lot of fun. It did need some extra editing because of multiple grammatical errors but I overlooked most of them and just enjoyed the lighthearted read. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
