The 65-watt 9265 and 9266 lamp can proudly wear the title "Lights of America". We have 9 of them in our barn, and they have been trouble-free. The light plastic gooseneck is a bit weak and requires a lot of tightening to prevent movement. A more robust pivot point would help prevent fractures from over-tightening. Also, the gooseneck is a point where water can leak into the housing. If you don't mount it under an eave or some other cover, water will travel through the gooseneck and pool in the lens. I wish they would fix this.

However, Lights of America has been getting cheaper with its packaging. The 27-watt version comes with the lens retaining screws simply taped to the inside of the mounting plate. They also stopped supplying the alternate black plug to disable the photocell.

Lights of America needs to review their Quality Control. Simply tosssing hardware into a box without an explanation could lead to easily avoidable failures. (Such as the lens falling off and/or leaking!)

Their cheapest version (18-watt) is the model you should avoid like the plague. We installed ~30 of these, and over 50% of them failed within 3 months. Truly a piece of junk!

Whoever designed/qualified the 18-watt version should be fired for incompetence/negligence. They should recall the 18-watt version and redesign it to make it reliable! Smoke in my barn is a no-no!

So, here's my summary:
65-watt -- Buy without worries; Mount under an eave for weather protection
27-watt -- Buy without worries; Mount under an eave for weather protection
18-watt -- 3-month disposable version *JUNK* (It appears they have discontinued this light)

Used 5 of these to illuminate a 50 x 80' outdoor ice rink in Minnesota. Lights of America says the ballasts are good to -20 F. I have used them down to about -5 F without any problem. Takes about 5 minutes to come to full brightness at that temp. Provides a nice bright white light with no yellowish glow, and supposedly gives off as much light as a 500W hallogen - which I believe after having used the hallogens last year. I have them mounted on 20' 4x4 posts and the neighbors joke that our back yard looks like Dodger Stadium on the drive in. Extremely cheap to operate compared to hallogen or metal hallide - the manual says 0.45 amps per light - wow. The casings are plastic but for $28 apiece and the very low operating cost you can't beat it. I was looking at well over $1000 for metal halides before I found these, so even if they only last a couple of seasons I could throw away a lot of these and still come out way ahead. The bulbs are supposed to last 10,000 hours in any event.

I have owned 2 of the 65 watt dusk to dawn fixtures over the past 4 years. The fixture lasts for maybe 2 years and then the circuit board all of a sudden goes dead, and its time to replace it. The light is great when it works, but these fixtures don't last. Also, the cheap plastic holding up the light breaks under the weight of the snow in the winter. We're done buying these fixtures.

I replaced this light with one identical to it for a friend. My friend had 2 of them. The concept is great that they are dawn to dusk and come on automatically when the sun goes down. The bulb is large and lights up an area very well. It is a special bulb with a larger screw base then a florescent type bulb. They call them a Florex bulb which is suppose to be brighter too. The only concern I had was how durable the electronics are. The electronic circuit stopped working in the old unit that I replaced which also contains the power supply for the bulb. So the bulb was good but the fixture was not. I replaced it with the same type fixture in hopes that this was just a defective unit. The vendor I got it from had it shipped out quickly which made me happy to get it quickly after ordering it.

I bought two of these lights (the #9266 which is black) about three years ago on sale but only installed one at the time. It lasted about two years and then suddenly died. I took it apart (thought it might just be the ambient light sensor) but apparently one of the circuit board components had failed. Installed the other one and it only lasted 11 months before failing. Same problem.

When the light works it works well, but if you get more than a year's service out of it then count yourself lucky.

Calling this fixture inferior does a disservice to the term "inferior". Junk, Trash, Flimsy.

The overall fixture is poorly designed and haphazardly assembled. Even the provided mounting hardware for the provided mounting plate did not properly fit a standard brand new junction box. The manufacturer did not provide an inexpensive gasket for the mounting plate and instead required caulking be used to weatherproof.

Light output is not as expected. A previous 300 WATT fixture provided much more light and illuminated a much larger area.

Overall, save your money

As others stated, this product does have some quality issues. It's not highly durable but good enough. The primary reason I bought this item was for the cold temperature start capability. I installed two lights inside my garage so I'm not concerned about exposure to harsh elements. As long as it comes on during the winter, I'll be satisfied.

Assembly was easy. Instructions were very clear. All the parts fit well except for the plastic clamps. Out of 10, I broke 8 trying to get them around the edges. I might have been installing them incorrectly, but at least they don't seem critical. There are four screws on the corners securing the lens to the plastic housing.

The bulbs give off about 60-70% of the light of a 120W halogen flood bulb but consume much less energy. I wanted to avoid using halogens floods inside the garage because of extra heat during summer (garage is detached with not much shade above). Perhaps that concern is not valid but nevertheless going with fluorescent seemed like a better idea.

For the price, this item can't be beat. You can probably find a more durable fixture but not close to this price point. I installed two units but ordered an extra in case one of them has a problem down the road.
