5.0 out of 5 stars The only sleep mask you'll ever need
I first spotted the Lights Out Sleep Mask on a visit to The Marketplace at Disney World Florida. That was enough of an endorsement for me to purchase it. It is the most comfortable and effective sleep mask I have ever used. The elastic band is wide, and velcro makes it easy to size for your head. Sounds good, in theory, but it is too cumbersome and puffy. Which means that when I sleep with the side of my face on the pillow, the mask can buckle, letting light in.

Turns out that unless you have bug-eyes, other regular eye-masks (like the Eagle Creek Eye Shades) don't touch your eye-lids or hinder REM sleep.

It seems like this product is...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but a similar item is better., May 8, 2008

I ordered this because I've become very light sensitive over the years and our bedroom has several large windows in it. The mask is very comfortable to wear -- no "eye mashing" that most eye shades give you. It is designed to provide open air pockets around your eyes so that you could open them wide and still be in the dark.

It provides very good darkness control with one exception. The tip of my nose juts out a bit and this creates separation between the mask and my face around my nostrils, letting light in. Since the windows in the bedroom are near towards the foot of the bed, light goes right up through the mask and into my eyes.

I still find the mask comfortable and fairly effective (I still gave it 4 stars) but if you're expecting full blackness and you have a good sized schnoz, you may be out of luck.

By the way, I ordered one of these and one of Sweet Dreams Contoured Sleep Mask with Earplugs and Travel Pouch - Black -- the latter item is better.

It seems like this product is attempting to provide a solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, and as a result, becomes an inferior product.

Pros: the velcro strap is convenient.

3.0 out of 5 stars Small and lightweight mask, June 29, 2009

I've written reviews on a number of these masks (read all my reviews to find them.) This one is good if you want something very small and lightweight. It doesn't do a good job of sealing out light, however. I improved mine by making a scissors cut halfway up the nose. This allowed the mask to separate a little and settle down onto my face, blocking out more light.

Incidentally, this is exactly the same mask (except for color) as the 'Sweet Dreams' mask sold here. Pick the cheaper of the two.

This item blocks out most light. If you want 100 light blockage, you will need to buy a brand that fits a bit tighter or puts a small amount of pressure on your eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great sleep mask..., July 31, 2008

This is my second Lights Out Sleep Mask and the first one actually lasted about 3 years. There is very little light allowed in around the nose piece which is very comfortable. The nose piece doesn't pinch at all and the velcro on the band keeps it as tight or as loose as you want it. Some people have trouble with the band crossing over their ears but I find it hardly noticeable. I looked and compared several kinds before I purchased this the first time and even did some comparison shopping this time. For your money, this is the best one to buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but still has small gaps around the nose..., October 9, 2011

I've never used one of these masks before, but thought I'd take a chance (and blue is my favorite color). I found the Lights Out mask to be really useful, dark, comfortable, and blocking out a great deal of the light. Like many of the masks that I've tried on in the store, though, this one has small gaps around the sides of the nose that let it a LOT of light. I find that my eyes settle in a 'looking down' position when I'm falling asleep, and it's not quite as dark looking down as it is looking straight ahead. I'm figuring that I can buy some sort of clip, or attachment to pinch the sides together at the nose to completely block out the light.

All in all, though, a good spend of $8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Night's Sleep, March 8, 2011

I bought one of these out of a catalog about a year or so ago for my husband and he loved it. When he didn't use it I did and it is the best. We have had other cheap ones like you can get at Walgreens or Wal-Mart and they don't even come close to this one. For one, this one stays put, whereas the others will slide around when you roll over and sometimes even slide off in your sleep. The contouring around the nose and the bubbled eye areas make this one very comfortable and blocks out any light. I had to order again since our new puppy chewed up the one we shared and I looked and looked for it and then found it here on Amazon. I ordered 3. One for my hubby, one for me, and one to keep in our spare bedroom for guests. I can't say enough about such a simple product except that these makers got it right! We love ours and you will too!

Love the mask, especially good value for the price. My only issue is when I actually sleep with it, the band that goes around my head is uncomfortable and I end up taking it off. But definitely enjoy it when my boyfriend is watching tv and I want to sleep.
