5.0 out of 5 stars
Excellent early Mclean..., January 27, 2004
This review is from: Lights Out (Audio CD)
I'm really only writing this to even the average rating out to a more respectable 4 stars...the only reason to dock this 1956 recording at all is that this recording does not push to the outer limits of the Bop formula the way Mclean would on later efforts like the mind-blowing "Destination Out!" But Mclean and Byrd are in top form here; the tunes are spectacular. This session is evidence of the rich product of the 1950's jazz scene. This record may be average, given a climate dominated by dozens of artists with high caliber sessions coming out every year, but that does not mean it does not objectively merit a five-star rating.
