I really liked the old radio shows and these Lights Out collections are great. and the old advertisments about getting your fiber helps with your daily activities are funny. The only thing that I didn't like was the introduction at the beginning of every story. It would have been nice to edit those out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of a great old time radio show, October 14, 2009
This review is from: Lights Out (Audio CD)
Arch Obler's "Lights Out" was a radio show that blazed new territory for its time. To really appreciate how these tales must have been received, picture yourself sitting by the radio in a home with perhaps a lamp in the background but not much more. There was no television, no cellular phones, and few of the other distractions. Just the soft glow of the radio dial and that sinister voice saying "Lights out...everybody!".

This collection of stories (the first in a two volume set) gives us a well-rounded taste of radio terror. Radio Spirits has gone to great lengths to clear up the pops and hisses you usually hear from old stories, though there are a few times when a drop in volume can be noticed. Unlike other similar collections, there is no booklet that accompanies this set giving you background or details on the stories. It's a minor detail, but I love getting that behind-the-scenes touch in these collections.

Arch Obler introduces each tale and gives you a little epilogue as well with further thoughts or inspirations behind the story. Not all of these are perfect, but stories like "The Basement" and "The Dream" will give you chills (especially if you listen to it at night). It's a great collection and I'm glad to see Radio Spirits bringing these back to us. If you enjoy this set, you can get the second volume for more great stories, or follow up with "Inner Sanctum Mysteries" for more of the same.
