A pale version of the original volume. Type face more difficult to read and lack of any of the original illustration make a much thinner expereince.

I acquired this as historical/period reference for a project and it has served quite nicely to give me a window into the perceptions of NYC at the time.

When ordering this book, it is advisable to only order the hardcover edition. It is a facsimile of the original 1880 book, and about twice as many pages as the paperback "public domain" copy which is also available here. You might also be interested in "New York By Gaslight" by James McCabe also, another facsimile edition, another big book. I know, there is a different book from the 1800s with the same title by a guy named George Foster, another reprint, but this is a different book. They are both really good, but the foster book is much shorter and has no illustrations. Bothe facsimile editions by McCabe have the original illustrations

If you're looking for a contemporary, comprehensive and detailed look at New York City in the second half of the 19th century, this book is excellent. I got it on kindle but you can also download it free of the internet.
