5.0 out of 5 stars first impressions polar lights 1/350 scale refit enterprise, May 5, 2005

able to look inside the box of the recently released refit enterprise kit from polar lights at a local hobby store...

first impression: wow!...... :D

the kit looks incredibly well engineered and very accurate....it's also "huge"(the deflector dish alone is about 3 inches across...)

been very impressed with polar lights, as it's obvious they do their homework...

they've created the most accurate version of this ship to date- not going to feel the need to buy after-market parts and decals to accurize this kit...

at first you're overwhelmed by how big it is, but this is a plus in terms of the detail you can bring to it to make it look more to the actual scale of the "real" ship...

it's also nice that it's set-up to be lighted...

impressed... (:

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best Enterprise model to date!, December 4, 2005

I have built 2 of these Polar Lights Enterprise kits so far, both lighted and movie detailed bow to stern, and I would gladly do another. The Scale is suberb and the accuracy is second to none. It's definately not a beginner kit, but take your time, it will turn out. Awesome model!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great model kit of a classic sci-fi ship, January 15, 2006
This review is from: Large 150 Piece Polar Lights 1/350 Scale Star Trek USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A... (Toy)
This kit is a true work of art. While there are a few minor glitches in detail (such as the hangar bay doors being a bit large), overall the kit builds up into an amazing display piece.

Holey Moley - I have to write a really good review here, cause this kit certainly deserves it. I gave it five stars for educational value as I assume my kid will be learning the details of this ship and not looking to improve his spelling or math skills. I did not get this from Amazon (unavailable back then as well) but recieved it two moths ago from Starfleet Models (very happy with their services). But I wanted to review it here as I feel Amazon is an incredibly good review resource. I wasn't able to open this until Xmas (son's present), so for a while my only impression was that it was a damn big and heavy box! But both my son and I were WAY impressed with the size of the model itself - this thing is HUGE. The engine nacelles alone on this monster are as long as the entire 1/650 original Enterprise model I built earlier.

As far as the quality of the kit; I've built a lot of models in my time, including high-quality and expensive kits from Tamiya and the likes, and I know what to look for in quality. This Polar Lights kit is one of the best I've seen as far as the fit of the parts and their general molding and detail. From what I can see there's virtually going to be no trimming necessary - the parts fit together that well. The main hull and nacelle parts are not attached to trees at all, but are housed separately in plastic bags. These main parts are very stout and I could find absolutely no molding flaws anywhere. In test-fitting things it appears the attachment design for the nacelle pylons is a good one and the size and sturdiness of the parts will make it work well (no sagging or crooked nacelles). There are lots of smaller detail parts, which are on trees, but attached so that they can be easily separated with a hobby knife and not leave a big scar on the piece. Tons of little clear window parts, all with corresponding numbers printed on the iside of the hull next to the respective portholes and such. This appears to have great potential for lighting up, though doing so would commit you to having to paint the hull - inside and out: the hull plastic is a bit opaque and LEDs would create a lot of extraneous glow around them, without either painting or masking with foil tape. No biggy, but worth mentioning.

As good as this kit is, I feel it's a bit pricey for what you get. It's par for the course in the model world though, so I guess my gripe is with the high prices for these types of kits in general. I paid eighty bucks (including shipping) for this from Starfleet Models, and after looking at what I got I now feel that price was OK. They are currently out of stock there, and everywhere else, and the only available kits are on auction. The current prices I'm seeing - a couple hundred bucks - is a bit ridiculous for a model in my opinion. But if you're looking for a big-scale Star Trek ship, your choices are pretty limited. If you can find one, and end up paying a lot for it, rest assured that you will find no cons whatsoever as far as the model itself. I rate this a solid 10 for sure.

Star Trek made me the man I am today. It was this show that inspired me to go into the sciences and do what I do today. So when I saw this model for sale, how could I pass it up?? 3 foot Enterprise??? Its taking me a while to build because of limited time, but if you check the web there are plenty of good sites that detail the building and final product.

I just got my kit last week (they started making them again). I was expecting it to be like the far more dingy models from over a decade ago, but I was surprised by the attention to detail, including the ability to later fit your model with lights. The aztecing decals cover the entire ship, giving the same glowing effect the movies had. You can choose between building the original refit Enterprise, or the variant Enterprise-A by picking a few different pieces.

The kit itself is definitely a difficult model to put together without some serious study to understand the interplay of paint, decals, and components. Unlike most model kits, the aztec decals cover the hull and are designed to show through certain types of gloss paints underneath the decal.

If you're a model builder or love Star Trek, this model would be a great conversation piece

I really, really hope they keep making this kit. The fit is outstanding, the parts are fascinating, and it is truly a joy to build.
