Pretty much an unknown quantity in U.S, British band Grand Drive does the Americana/roots thing better than just about any of its American counterparts. This is pretty much a CD of love songs. Brothers Danny and Julian Wilson mine a variety of 70s-ish AM radio styles with aplomb, but never self-consciously.
Fuzzy guitars take the stage as the release kicks off with the excellent "Love and the Truth". Great pop songs abound. The highlights include stately "Santa Rita", "Maybe I'm A Winner", and the psychedelia-tinged "Me & My Star". "I Believe In Love" sounds like a lost ABBA track. "I Won't Let You Down" samples the beginning of Steely Dan's Do It Again before melding into a frothy bubblegum stew that sounds like could have fallen off Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. With each release Grand Drive takes orchestral country-pop to new heights. Some have complained that the Wilson Brothers write schmaltzy lyrics; and that fuzzy, gauzy sounding guitar is kind of claustrophobic at times. Buy this CD and "Me and My Star" will become your new favorite song. Fans of Josh Rouse should find plenty to like. |
